Multiplayer screen not working

Hi,
I have just purchased CIVIII and Conquest. Everything seems to work fine but when we try to use any of the multiplayer games we get stuck on the first screen...

If I choose hotseat game it brings us to the setup screen but we are unable to change any of the settings. All the pull downs seem to be disabled. And we are unable to close the window. We can rename player 1 and that is all.

This is running on a Windows XP Home edition. We just installed patch 1.22 and still no good.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I've had similar troubles with this. This might not be the same situation, but I tried to play a hotseat Conquest with my brother. After much trial and a ton of error, I figured out that to change the difficulty level (the only thing you can change that has any effect in a Conquest), you have to change it before choosing the Conquest. It will begin that way.
As for the names of the players, once you click "Add Human Player" (drop-down menu), you can change it in the "Customize Your Tribe" box that appears.
To close the window, just click the "X" in the lower right corner.
