Multiple Great Person bug: funny 'fix"

As I was selecting my great person from Hagia Sophia, another player quit, giving me 2 great people (great engineers) - but the catch was the "pick a great person" icon and message stayed with me every turn, so that the only way to end the turn was to let the timer run out. Despite 1/2 of the players quitting, I decided to stay to see what finishing Liberty would do.

So when I finished Liberty, the stuck great person message went away, but I didn't get a great person! I am wondering if it knew that I already got 2 great engineers, or that doesn't matter?
