Does anyone know any free software avalible for download that I could use to do a little editing to MP3s. The main thing I want to be able to do is layer a couple of tracks togehter. I really want to record myself playing some guitar and then layering each of the riffs together. For example I want to be able to record my self playing a rythm figure, record a solo then merge them together. I don't know how long I'll be interested in this, so I don't really want to pay for something that I might not get much use out of.
A recording function would also be handy, I tried to hook my guitar into the line in on my sound card and used the windows recording program to record but it sounded truly awful. But the recording isn't much of an issue as I have been using my MP3 player's line in function and it sounds ok

That is an excellent program, it does just what I need. Thanks very much

Now if only I could get the distortion sounding a little better I'd be set.

This has messed up on me. I can't get MP3s ecoded properly. I end up with the a small 26bytes every time I try. I can export to WAV and Ogg, but not to Mp3. Then when I try to convert the Wav or Ogg to Mp3 it ends up twice as long and really slow and awful quality.

Isn't Goldwave a time-limited demo? I'm not entirely sure, I've never been able to run the program on my machine.

Yeah. 150 commands per session and 3000 commands total. If you use up your entire quota each time, you can only run the software 20 times. But I haven't used it that much - my primary Goldwave use is to reduce my MP3s. Sometimes the ones I download have too much silence at the end or beginning.

Did you download the Lame Codec?

Just go to file>preference>file formats then "find library".

Here it is - http://mitiok.free.fr/

Yeah I got that. It was working perfectly then it just quit on me. I made two MP3s and they work fine, but for some reason I can't make any more. All I get is the same 26byte file. Although if I load one of the MP3s I made earlier I can edit it and export it as an MP3. I don't know what's wrong.

Well I've found a way to work around it, it involves opening one of the other files I made deleting the audio from it and replacing it with the new audio. Not perfect, but it should be adequate until I get this sorted out.

All that I can think of (other than a reinstall) is to see if there are any orphaned files in the Audacity temp folder, and delete them. I've never had this problem myself.

I've uninstalled and resinstalled a number of times, with no go. The temp directory is cleared out. I have no idea what's wrong. I've emailed their tech support to see if they know what's happened. Prehaps the only solution will be to wait for a new version to be released.

Nope. In fact I deleted the directory and unzipped it again just to make sure nothing was missing. I can still export MP3s if I open an old MP3 file first, but not a brand new one. Quite inconvinient.

No I believe it is perfectly accurate, but that is a discussion for another thread
