What are people's favorite/most clutch/most valuable single units that games just turn on?

I'm thinking of 2 right now.

-The one Hawk I build, which explores the whole map w/ open borders + nets me map gold + warns me of incoming stacks + scouts for danger in invasions + allows me to spectate other wars.

-The lizardman from Dwarves vs Lizards (this event comes up like 80% of my games!). I say man single because one usually dies early but the one that survives just roams the earth becoming ludicrously promoted and snagging whatever animals you need for Dancing Bears, Grand Menagarie, defense, and griffins for hilarious worker harassment. And then when he caps out at 100 xp from that he's usually very useful in any wars with other civs, so by the time you get poisons he's like a 150-200 xp death machine assassin that ends up getting Aeron's chosen half the time.

I usually pick the Dwarves with that event, as the spawned barb lizardmen usually just run away, so your exploring unit is fine, plus 2 axemen, rather than having to fight off a bunch of barbs.

I'll have to say Chalid, because somebody will so it may as well be me.

And Barnaxus. He's awesome.

I like assassins and rangers.

Settlers and workers are pretty important!

Best wishes,

Breunor

I agree. That first settler really makes the difference between winning and losing!

Hrm I never really realized how early in the tech tree Chalid is for something so powerful. Never actually used him and for some reason thought he required one of the really expensive techs.

I usually don't start popping stuff until I have a unit that can take down the axemen. Opening things with a scout just turns out so, so badly too often for my liking :/

Unless its some Ruins or a Barrow 2 tiles from a city spot :P
