Hi,

after long and desperate attempts to fix the graphical and CTD problems I found a way to get the game to run more or less smooth without crashes.

First I followed some hints on an other thread (I don't remember which one it was): I installed the newest bink and phyton on my computer and copied the files over the civ4 files. Then I installed the newest beta drivers from nvidia (81.87) for my geforce4 4200ti. With nvhardpage se I set all DX settings to maximum. I also installed the latest soundcard drivers. Then I cleared the game cache.
After all this having done, the game runs now quite good, no crashes even after 3 hours of playing and no graphic gliches and no slowing down of the game!
No idea what of all these changes helped, but maybe it gives you a helping idea.

Heya guys,

I just wont to say that i have similar expirience. But more than installing all new files for bink, python and miles.....before every single start or loading of saved game...empty game cache.....

That helpd me that play game virtually without crashes...occasional slowdown but thats all..

my sys for referrence:
AMD 64 3000+
NForce 4, Gigabyte
GForce 6600 (Asus)
512 RAM, Corsair
windows prof. XP, sp2

hope someone get this helpfull..
bye

This is exactly what I have been telling people to do for a while now. Clear you cache before and after every time you play and it will help big time. It won't make the problem disappear as the game will bog down again after prolonged play (I normally play 3 hours or more each time) but it will make the game playable again without lag.

Some people (such as I) have reported that they do not have a Civ IV cache! How come? I did look at both locations where the Civ IV stuff is located.

P.S. (edit) > There was a third location, which I found thanks to "TheBarnacle" (see following post)...so I could finally get to empty the game's cache. THxxx

you do. go through something like this:

'my comp'/'hard drive'/'docs & settings'/'user (you)'/'application data' (this is hidden, you have to show hidden folders)/'my games'/'civ iv'/'cache'

Thank you : I found it! I was not looking in the right "My Games" folder : I was searching in the one located in "My Documents".

"Application Data" was not hidden (to me) but I did not know there was any Civ IV file located there. THxxx

i don't play first person shooters or other system stressing games and i've noticed civ iv gets my puter hotter than anything else i run by a long shot. i don't have onboard temp monitors but i have touched my vid and cpu heatsinks after civ iv hard reboot crashes and normal shutdowns after running civ iv for awhile and each time and my stuff is red hot. i let one of the case exhaust fans blow on my leg and i can feel the temp rise and know the thing is gonna crash in a hour or so. no other game raises the temps. i've stuck more half a$$ed fans in the case and experimented with having the side off and can get the thing to last for 2-3 hours of playing. only a few posters mention their systems running hot so it has me puzzled a bit.
what i do find interesting is i check these forums several times every day and i've never seen less than 80 people reading this tech help forum. if it isn't a indicator many people are still having serious problems with this game i don't know what would be.
