my ATI--problems with all 3D games

hi,

I've read on this forum about problems with ATI cards; and I have an ATI card on my laptop, but I've been having the same problems with all games I've run that require 3D acceleration, including Civilization 4, so I'm wondering if anyone here can help.

My laptop is an HP Pavillion, AMD processor, with ATI Mobility RADEON Xpress 200 series. Either two things happen when I play games that require 3D; they immediately shut down whenever 3D graphics are rendered; or--which happens more often--they shut down immediately when either I use the keyboard or click the mouse.

With Civilization 4, re-installing the game once fixed the problem, but then it came back; then re-isntalling the ATI drivers fixed it, but the problem came back then also.

The problems differ, sometimes it applies to any mouse click, sometimes its the keyboard. Right now as it is, if I avoid using the keyboard I can play the game, but as soon as I press any key, it shuts down.

Other games I've had problems with include Sim City 4, and Arx Fatalis.

On a side note, I sometimes get the message when I press the volume control buttons on my laptop, that the synaptics touchpad features are being disabled because it detects another device in use. I know this has nothing directly to do with graphics, but I'm mentioning it because of problems with the keyboard and mouse. Usually I'm also using a USB mouse in addition.

Thanks,

as it is now, it seems that if i use the keyboard in the game prior to the 3d game graphics loading, the game shuts down before it shows the game graphics.

this is weird i know it must have something to do with some conflict.

please advise me anyone who can help

EDIT: i reinstalled now it happens when i use the mouse

Here's a question:

Run DxDiag from your START menu. Under the third tab (display) does it show all your acceleration as enabled? I had some trouble with that and the new ATI drivers. If stuff is disabled (or grayed out), try the ATI removal tool in Add/Remove programs and then reinstall JUST the display driver from the site.
