when i go into civ, the opening credits come up with the galaxy, i press enter and it moves to a certain point and stays there. i can't go anywhere apart from ctrl-alt-del which isn't nice. i've tried letting the credits run through (long and boring) but it still gets stuck. what is wrong? how can it be fixed?

It might be because you're running it in Windows? Try running it in Dos instead.
If you're running CIVDOS in Windows, there may be no hope. With CIVWIN there's not much you can do unless you're running Win XP.
If you do happen to be running XP, this will work for CIVWIN. Not guranteed for CIVDOS.
Right click on the icon.
Select "Properties"
Click on "Compatibility" tab.
In the "Compatibility Mode" section:
Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
Select in the drop box "Windows 95"
And that may allow you to play.
