My english teacher is a raving leftist - in class!

Not that I want to accuse you of anything but before I call something inappropriate I generally like to hear the other side of the story. She may have had very good reasons for doing what she did or she may not even have done what you claim she did. Either way I'll refrain my commenting.

What I described is exactly what happened. She wouldn't deny it.

Blimey! A school brat who actually understands or cares about politics! Please, come to my school. The other day one of my form made a wonderful political speech about how we should invade Afghanistan because "...they wouldn't stand a chance against the US, England, and the French." But I guess he was only 13.

Honestly, I'd love to throw some politics into my lessons, but to be honest it would go straight over their heads.

By the way, it's a good idea to listen to your teacher because, believe it or not, there's a good chance that they are smarter than you are. Remember, intelligence is what you think you have until you learn some more.

I'm a 28 year old brat!:D

My professor was dead wrong with most of what she said, so why should I listen to her? She can't be too smart if she really thinks "Bill Clinton told the truth".

Anyway, the thread starter said this, too, was an English teacher he had. Was she a lit teacher? What was on the syllabus for that day? Did you prepare for something entirely different? Was the monologue related, or not related, to the class material?

Its just a plain old english 101 class. She was reading an article that had been used for the previous year's final. Reading the article was relevant, launching into a monologue was not.

Yes but people have a way of describing something so that it is useful to their point. I am not saying you are lying but it is a fact of human nature. From the facts that you have given I am sure someone could come up with a story which justifies the actions of the teacher. I should point out that, that someone is not me.

You think you have problems with leftist teachers?
We have problems with them in Denmark...
My history teacher is a semi-marxist, constantly focusing on "Materialist" and "Idealistic" historic literature, and openly speaks about the reasonability of the marxist history (the materialist one) and explains students that "Liberals are self-centered, religious, and rather illiterate right-wingers, while socialists believe in solidarity, freedom, equality, and really should be considered centrist." In Denmark, liberalism is not what it is in the US, rather it is a rightist classical European liberalism.
My chemistry teacher (I attend the Danish equivalent of a high school) is the chairman of the Socialist People's Party in my region and was formerly the member of a 70s revolutionary organisation.
My English teacher made us analyse an anti-American poster, where I and another one had to defend every side of American policy they could come up with.
Red posters are to be found everywhere and the media are red. Don't delude yourself into thinking you suffer from leftist propaganda... we suffer... :(

Bummer, that sucks man. He makes my professor look fair and balanced!

Well, considering that everone in the class was irritated by it (shifting in their seats and packing up), I don't think anyone would be on her side.

Political agendas shouldn't be part of ANY teacher.

No, it shouldn't, but unfortunatly it is, well, in my case that is. My teachers, (2 out of 4) rave about the greatness of George W. Bush and the successfulness of the war on terrorism. (during class). Oh well, I guess its a unprofessional/stupid teacher thing. (see sig)

Excused for being late? I wasn't late, she was! She made us stay an extra 10 minutes while she spewed her garbage.

I think its totally unprofessional.

Not too mention inconsiderate.

Just get up and leave without out a fuss - at the scheduled end of class time and skip such crap. If she wont be considerate of your time - no need be considerate of her.

But of course - we know teachers/professor's are never subjective in their marking.;)

Yes teachers are people too and have opinions, yatta yatta yatta. But when you pay for your education, then time wasting by teachers/professors and/or inconsiderate students. Is never appreciated.

Students also have schedules of their own to keep. Like catch public transport home 5 minutes after class. Or should they just miss their ticket home (and wait an extra 20-45 minutes, for the next one), to accomodate some demagogue?

Although, my classes (past and present) were all related to technical/maths courses. So a teacher/professor - espousing a particular view point/idealogy just didn't occur. And even if it did it would just not be tolerated by students at all. Who were always focused on passing the courses (but not so focussed on actually doing the work ;)) and getting liquered up when the work was done.

I'm surprised no one suggested leaving earlier. Is this a large class in a big lecture hall? If so, all the better. You probably wouldn't be the first or last to have left such a class "early." Universities don't take attendance for a reason. You've paid to go to class and learn. If you don't want to learn, the school and I would say the professor doesn't care. Most professors aren't there to teach so much as to research anyway (maybe not English teachers). Chances are the prof won't have any idea who you are so you won't have to worry about your grade anyway.

If it's a smaller class, and the prof knows everyone by name, then you should have a good enough relationship that you can simply say something like "If we're done with the lecture material, I have to go" and the prof will understand.

Its a smaller class, and its not like I could have got a word in edgewise...;)

Leaving would be the best solution.

I had a professor trying to keep us late once (not for politics, but for digital logic). I simply got up and left, he protested, but I pointed to the clock, and said I have other classes, and left.

Next time I will leave. I'll tell her I have a bus to catch or something...

Tell her your going to a Bill O'Reilly rally, that ought to go over well.

That would be a lie and that would be wrong!

Just walk out and don't even acknowledge her.
It will save you having to waste time and the effort of actually speaking to her.

because of course she will respond and worse yet you'll have to listen to more of her garbage. :)

Cauliflower ears aren't cool!:D

Hey you guys have Bill O'reilly rallys? Where I want to go to one.
I'm up for a no-spin zone.:D

I heard one of the other students comment that she must need a drink.:D I only have 2 more classes thank God. Funny thing is she likes me because I do good work. I wonder how much my grade would suffer if she knew I was from 'the dark side'

My advice to you: Get used to it.

You will see a lot of teachers that like spending their class time discussing their own beliefs and political views. You might see some with extreme liberal views, and you will see those with their conservative beliefs as well. If you don't like what you're hearing and you are brave, speak up and disagree or speak up and tell the teacher to discuss something else. There's a chance you can get in trouble for that, but what the hey.
