My Huge Sid Milk Run

If you can't reach magical numbers, see if you can cut a turn by rushing a certain unit mid way each time you accumulated a certain number of shields.

I haven't done that before per se. At first when I read that it seemed like a good idea. But, when you think about it, it doesn't really work to your benefit... or at least you need to do so carefully. If you say have a 13 spt town and it has 39 shields in the box already when you cash-rush a cavalry, then you've essentially wasted 13 shields of production, since the box fills as soon you buy it. If you had just let the cavalry finish "naturally", you would have wasted only 11 shields. I suppose could disconnect salpeter, rush a knight, then reconnect the saltpeter and swap to a cavalry and only waste 3 shields in the process. And that makes a modicum of sense. But, veteran and elite cavalry can and do die. So, I kind of believe it better to just cash-rush more armies. Maybe you waste some shields in the process, but I don't think many of us lose armies often and with their other benefits, I think you come out more ahead this way... at least eventually.

A pretty good idea actually. I just don't think it works as well as one might think.

I've warred on Sid in Republic before - the weariness does get really bad, but you just put the lux slider up to 70% or more, if you need to. You have unhappy citizens for the duration of the war, but so what - thats 20 or 30 turns, no big deal.

I disagree that the key to wars is rails - the keys are armies and bombardment.

In essence, yes, but your domination will really be quite slow without rails. ;)

Don't believe Elear here. He knows better... or at least should if he has a memory (check what you forwarded me Elear from some other player).

I wasn't disagreeing with either position. You can do fine without rails, but they're also helpful. :dunno:

Anyway enough hijacking another thread with our little side discussions...Chamnix, you can have it back. ;)

For instance, if you have a 25spt city and you're building cavalries. You're 2 spt short of 3 turn cavalries. After first turn of production, rush a settler for 30/80 shields. You'll get 3 turn cavalry that way.

I apologize for the unexplained dropping of this thread. I had reached a fairly boring part of the game, and I had lots of other stuff going on in my life at the time, so I took a break. I had intended to come back to it - even if I couldn't bring myself to milk it the rest of the way, I figured I could win by domination (at the time that table was empty - I didn't check if it still is). Anyway my old computer died suddenly, and I was unable to salvage anything from it. I bought a new computer, but I don't have the final save to continue playing this game for any victory.

That's a shame. So much effort for nothing

I sincerely hope that you will try another one.

Although I said that I would not do it again after the Demigod histo game, I am planning on a Deity attempt. Sid is surely beyond me for a histo game.

My gut reaction was that I would not try again. I just can't see devoting that many hours to a Civ game at this point. Unfortunately, I felt compelled to run MapFinder just to see what came up. I put in fairly ridiculous criteria, so I only get about 1 map per day, and fortunately none of them have been any good.

Chamnix,

Do you think you'll play any other civ III games for the HoF in the future?

If I play any single player Civ III games, then they will almost certainly be for the HoF, but I'm not sure if I'll devote that kind of time to Civ anymore. My guitar addiction seems to have cured my Civ addiction.
