My Religious Experience

Don't over-estimate the 1400BC diplo-win. First, he went Marathon to give himself a ton of turns (210), second he went with a Terra map to get everyone into a small space (probably with high water too), and third, he pursued a VERY focused strategy, using the Oracle to grab Theology very early so he could build the AP. He didn't even found any other cities or get attacked. Everything was plotted out meticulously so that he had enough Missionaries out there to make the first AP vote about Diplo-victory.

(Also, I'm seeing an 830 AD spaceship on Settler. (Typo on your part?) Interesting, sure, but Settler isn't really a fair comparison.)

"Don't over-estimate the 1400BC diplo-win" ( Religious victory actually - YOUR TYPO ). Number of turns is proportional on different game speed to achieved result. Well, some prefer Quick, some Marathon...
It is UNUSUAL to be attacked by AI in about 1400 BC, it is a time of peaceful expansion, even more - it is HUGE map, so a lot of space.

No typo, Space Colony 460 AD Victory by Dynamic(Tiny map, Settler).

Space Race is an OLD type of victory (before Beyond the Sword). Space Race victory requires to LAUNCH space ship, but Space Colony requires space ship to reach Alpha Centaury, that results in extra turns, so is more difficult.

Ah, I see the different victory types now. Long time since I played Vanilla. I wouldn't call it more difficult, though.

As I said, there wasn't that much space on his Huge map. He has a rather small Eurasia, he may as well have played on a Small Pangaea. I'm not denying he did something I can't do, just that it wasn't as great as it looks like. I can't do 3 card monty either, but I don't consider those who can to be card sharks on that basis alone.

Well, he demonstrated a great understanding of game mechanics, great patience to assemble together all factors required to produce great result. It is like sport competition, the best once will come and get 1st place. Definitely a professional. There are several ways to is show that you are a pro - 1. Hall Of Fame (select your conditions and win). 2. Game Of The Month(all have same conditions, the best wins) 3. Ladder tournaments (defeat online your opponents)

Somehow, it seems to have slipped my notice that someone asked about letting other civs found religions and then just taking them.

This is certainly the most-likely circumstance, and happens all the time, but IME it doesn't really grab me. If you don't control the world's biggest religion(s), and you take the Shrine city (really sweet when they spent the Prophet so you don't have to), yea, you'll get a noticeable income boost, maybe enough to move your slider 10%. A lot of the time, though, these cities are not in handy locations, and worse, it's VERY unlikely you're going to have multiple religions founded in the same city.

When you have 2 or more religions in a city, and those Shrines are built, when you get Wall Street, you essentially multiply the amount of money you get by the number of Shrines there! If you have 50 cities in the world, would you rather have a bonus of 50 gpt from one religion or 250 gpt from five?

If you found the religion, you can hold off on founding new cities, so that they appear in the same city, and then focus your building on maximizing your income by working on only one city. Settle Merchants and Prophets there, build the Gold multiplier buildings, etc. Much cheaper to have to improve one city than all of them.

It does require an initial investment, though. It would probably be suicidal to restrict yourself to a single city in a high-difficulty game, and even to try to found an early religion if you had a competitor, and so you have no choice but to try to take them from other players.

I had seven shrines once. That was as Saladin in Earth 1000 (Vanilla Noble). I started with three, took two from Asoka and two from Qin.
