The internet connection at my apartment recently changed and we're now sitting behind a router, which has made it impossible for my roommate and I to play together. Is there any way we can fix this? We don't have access to open ports on the router. :( Should we try to directly connect, if so what do we have to do to make that work? Is there anything that can be done? I appreciate any help greatly. Thanks in advance!

You should give some more info about your connection, network, how the PC's are connected (to eachother? via hub? both connected to router?) etc. :)

I'm behind a University firewall and I have to use IP addresses to connect if I want to play Civ with someone outside of the Uni.

hoss - Just go to a PC store and ask for LAN cable called 10T / 100TX crossover, or crosslink. With this cable you can connect PC to PC. Than just configure your IP on both pc`s. Example first pc will have ip: 192.168.1.1 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 def. gateway: none and second ip: 192.168.1.2 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 def. gateway: none. With these settings you should be able to ping on connected pc`s ip adress. and thats it. But remember, if you are connected on internet via this NIC (lan card) write down all settings first, than you can try this. good luck

OR ask your LAN admin. to enable routing between your pcs.

good luck

Hmm while you guys are talking about this, dont you guys find Civ 3 MP horribly laggy?

I play so much single player Civ that when I tried starting a game up with my bro we both ended up going "screw this" and quitting due to how long it takes for the interface to respond.

Its really irritating to me too, since I know a little about the more technical side of games, and I just don't see why Firaxis couldn't have made more of the game's MP actions client-side. I really think Civ3's netcode could be a helluva lot better!

I played a game with 4 people and whilst there was some lag, the time spent waiting between turns couldn't really be seen as its impossible to tell just when someone finishes a turn and the next one starts. You just need to be patient :p

Thanks a bunch Kubannus, that's what I was going to try, but I just wanted to hear that it actually could be done before I did. I'll let you all know if it works or not in the next few days.

I guess I just dont have the patience... I adjust science spending slider thingy nearly every turn. Its just frustrating as it can take me a matter of 2 to 3 seconds to adjust it in single player, whereas in MP the lag causes me to take three times that time to adjust it each turn due to the lag. Units take a few seconds to respond to commands too. Pretty much everything does.

<- Not patient enough for that. :(

You could always try PBEMs instead. The games take longer but the actual turns that you play won't lag and it may also give you more patience if you ever return to playing normal MP games...

Well, i play some Blizzard games online: Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft. And all of them are hacked like helll. everything you do client side opens opportunities to be hackable. I think it is needed to make online games run completely server side, only Graphical User Interface can be client side.
As member of these forums, you should have noticed how far people can go to extract information from games. They go even further to give themselves unfair advantages in multiplayer games.

At some point you just ave to trust the people who you are playing and hope that they do not cheat... There will always be small cheats and there has to be an agreement on what is deemed to be acceptable. Should it be possible to break treaties the turn after they are signed? etc. Cheating can be spotted though and its one good thing about PBEMs is that there are a list of save files that can be checked for any odd moves...
