My workers are going bonkers!

Is it just something that happens or am I doing something wrong with my workers.

Ive got 10+ workers on auto just sitting in cities when there is obviously work to be done at cities further across the map. I know enemies near by can cause them to retreat but that doesnt seem to be the case.
A gob of them are messing with making a Workshop on a cotton square? Lots of forests could use at least a Lumbermill that they seem to ignore.
Im even having trouble selecting the workers idling in town doing nothing. Sometimes the wrong unit moves out of the city after selecting an idle worker.

I could micomanage all my workers but in a large map that would add many hours to the game I dont want!

Is there anything I should be doing or some worker AI mod out there?

Thanks

IMHO, the automation isn't working as well as it should at the moment. I suspect that there's some flag where a worker decides a square isn't to be worked (for the moment) and then sticks to that decision when circumstances change. I certainly find there are workers idling in cities and undeveloped plots. When I cancel an idle worker's orders then automate him again he'll stay idling. If I cancel an idle worker's orders and manually assign him to a task, sometimes some other idle workers get busy around him. I haven't fathomed this out fully.

Also
- Do Illian workers sometimes ignore ice plots or is this just the same issue as above?

- Lanun workboats try to build pirate havens when automated. If a city already has the haven the workboat stays where it wants to build the haven instead of moving to another city or developing a reseource.

The other day I accidentally set a worker to auto and he immediately rushed over to a deer camp in a city's BFC and started building a fort on it. Leave them alone and they're like children. On crack.

This kind of thing always happened. I remember in vanilla Civ 4 having automated workers start bulldozing fully-developed towns to build farms. That was annoying. Always turn on 'Automated workers leave old improvements' on the game options screen if you're going to automate them.

The fort building is absolutely ******** and is one of the reasons why I try to avoid the construction tech as long as possible in marathron games. The moment you research construction, the workers get this brilliant idea that every city needs a fort as close as possible, regardless if it's on a resource plot or a hill with a mine on it.

All fifteen workers will drop what they're doing and rush over to build forts on all my cities, wasting plots. The only real way to stop it is by turning on 'don't build over old improvements' and then microing works at new cities and stopping them from building forts.

I really think there needs to be an automate option that turns off certain actions, like fort building.

My main gripe was when they were building FARMS on top of my constructed mana nodes to draw them into Fire, Life, etc.

NO, That's not how it works! You do not FARM Mana! What are you doing? There is no option for "Chinese" in this game! RAAAGGHHH
