Dear oh dear. The French in my latest game really losing the plot!

On Earth , playing Warlord level (so I can bum around without the other civs giving me a hard time) as the Americans. (6 other civs to start)

The French had started as a 2nd gen civ early on in South America, so I had a unit guarding the entrance to SA and the French likewise had a unit guarding their side of that border.

Move on a couple of thousand years, after the Russians have killed all other civs except the Zulus who killed them to inherit the rest of the (non americas) world. I notice the French unit is missing and Im getting quite a few barbarians coming at me from South America. I start sending one or two expendable units (2000 year old militias etc...) to investigate.

I find SA crawling with barbarians, so I gather a bigger force to investigate and discover that of the four French cities, three have been taken over by Barbarians. I clean out these marauding amazons and now have three cities I dont want.

The French only have Paris, size 10, frequent spells of disorder, and their military reduced to a solitary militia! I declare war (via rejecting the offered treaty) and try to encourage the French to claim back their cities.

I tell you ! - what a bunch of peaceniks. Despite my constant refusals of their pleadings to leave them in peace they dont make any effort to take thier cities back even walking their settlers past them despite them being unguarded and us officially at war!

In the end I send something like 20 settlers down to south america, road and irrigate the whole damn continent for them and even built some railroads. Finally after another thousand years the French get enough confidence to take back their cities and start expanding again!

Ive had to place some fortresses in strategic positions loaded with units ready to help defend the useless sods should the zulus (who have tanks and planes etc...) decide to conquer their fear of water and take a trip to the new world...

Some civs really are basket cases...
sigh.

Why defend the French? Let the Zulus take over French cities and bring some excitement into the game!

I've never seen this with the French...

Sounds like the Chinese, though.

You can see this happen sometimes when a civ just doesn't have a city connected to the water then it just stays backward. But 3 out of 4 cities being taken over by barbarians is just pathetic!

Well, the Zulus never ended up trying to invade France, though they did send a couple of ironclads and cruisers to do a bit of coastal bombardment, and one of their cities was in bomber range of a few french cities. I put paid to that with a few battleships.

Zulus ended up launching a spaceship, so not to be outdone I built one too.

Annoyingly when I launched, it turned out mine was due to arrive the same year as the zulu one, so I put a few Armors in a frigate and sent it with an escort of about 8 battleships on a sightseeing tour of Zimbabwe ;-)

Poor French only managed to get a few structurals into orbit. lol

Having won the game and with only 2 other civs to play with I rather lost interest, and started a new game.

btw: Very annoying the way winciv implements its autosave. Cleaned out no less tha 209 .sav files from my winciv directory after I finished that game.

<sigh> Really miss the DOS version...

Some fun I had lately:
The two remaining civs were much behind in techs so I had battleships and they were still battling it out with warriors, cavalry etc. so I saw they had units outside eachothers cities. I bombed their cities with my battleships and they both took over cities from eachoter and then I bombed those cities again and they took their cities back again from eachother. I repeated this with bombers for the inland cities. So they basically destroyed eachother with a little help by me....:D

Hehe, started another game in North America on warlord. Ive launched my spaceship already and got all the techs, now just sitting back to watch the other civs grow up. One of them just invented gunpowder!
lol
This time there is a better variety. Got Germans in south america, russians control europe and asia, and the zulus are restricted to africa. Oh yeh. The English are really surging ahead with London in England, and ... uh... thats it.
Actually they found me first. Guess they must have got a big shock when my Bomber sunk their trireme. Still they did better than the Germans in South America who took ages to make contact!
I have an arsenal of 40 nukes, and the toughest unit Ive seen outside my empire was a barbarian cannon...
Im amusing myself helping the zulus and the russians at random in their little wars. Carrier based bombers are excellent for cleaning the phalanxs out of cities to pave the way for one side or the others legions to enter...
Im thinking of giving the English western Europe, now must wait for them to build another trireme and land a unit there...

Hmm. Not a bad idea. (giving Barbarians cities).
Wouldnt be the first time Ive done it, but maybe while all the other civs are behind I have a chance to build a decent barbarian empire!
Ill see if Australia is getting any barbarian landings still and if so build a city there for them. Once thats done I can leave it as a seed and really develop the rest of the island with more cities and railrod etc..., then I can leave the cities producing armor and similar units and clear out the defence so the barbarian seed city can take them over.
This could be cool.
Do barbarians change the production of a city if its producing a military unit? Barbarians with nukes could be amusing ;-)

Do Barbarians ever build any buildings in their towns? Do they ever build settlers? I will have to develop a continent for them and see what they can do. Hehe, you know your bored with Civ when you try to help barbarians conquer the world.

No, not at all. They only capture your cities and then use them as support towns to build new units to conquer all cities on the continent. But they won't really settle nor research new tech, for their units will be automatically upgraded according to the average tech level of all the competing civs. Not sure what I said was clear though.

Makes perfect sense. I guess I didn't realize it was based on the tech levels of the players, although I don't see a lot of barbs in modern times.

Nice developing help for the French. Well this can sometimes be annoying as I discovered very often: As soon a civ get`s more or less destroyed (only one or two cities left) they took a wimpy stance and do everything you want just to keep those cities but they will never try to get them back.

But being conquered by Barbs is really the lowest I`ve ever heard. Shame to Boney.

I've seen this before in a game - South America completely occupied by barbarians.

That was really cool. They'd managed to destroy a whole civ (can't remember which) which had restarted there. Held about 5-6 cities. I remember my friend (who was playing the game) sending a transport-full of armors to capture the continent but they got wiped out! The barbs were simply so numerous that it took a real effort to get all those cities :crazyeye:

Funny things like that often happened in Civ1. One game out of ten seemed to mutate and develop the weirdest situations... my funniest Civ memories are therefore from Civ1, and that's why I miss it the most

lol, I just started a new game as America.. started a city.. went exploring.. ran into a tribe icon, the clans have acepted my rule.. a new city is created, and as soon as I get 1 militia in there, a pirate ship attacks the city (it's on the coast), kills the Phalanx, and then occupies my city all in 1 turn. Then I move my units which are keeping the Aztecs from entering North America up to protet my cities, the Aztecs swarm in, surround my cities, and thus end up protecting me from the Barbarians. lol! Although I have sine pushed the Aztecs back down into South America without fighting a single battle, have built a city in Panama where a unit MUST go in order to get from NA to SA and vice-versa, which just happens to be on a mountain tile. I'm working on Barracks and will then build a City Wall, and send tons of my units there. I plan on making it an impenetrable fortress. =D Only problem is I have to keep produing settlers from other ities in order to raise the population, at least until I get railroad technology and get at least 1 nearby tile to produce 3 food. =P
