Natural Disasters

Apologies but I am a new user of this (excellent) website, I am sure this must have come up before on discussions of Civ III. Why are there no natural disasters - mountains that turn out to be volcanic, a tech advance to work out where faultlines are so you can protect cities, floods (particularly as these will get worse with global warming), hurricanes etc etc.
Surely this would add more realism, particularly as a 110mph hurricance can affect a 'less civilised' nation far worse than an advanced civilisation.
