in my recent game, i was french and in a phantom war with the japanese (see the thousand year war thread for complete details). i was marching an archer along a 1 tile isthmus on a hub map, and stopped in an english city. when the AI moved, a japanese caravel attempted to cross the isthmus through the english city, and ended up engaging my archer! my archer won that battle and sank the caravel.

this might have some strategic use. i could park some units in neutral cities on a 1 tile isthmus, and possibly stop naval invasions! a strength 9 musketeer with city defender bonus could easily kill frigates and galleons! i wonder if land combat bonuses would be used? i also wonder who will attack when a galleon loaded with cavalry engages my land defender, the galleon or the cavalry... interesting possibilities :)

I once experinced something similar. I had fighters stationed in neutral chinese coastal cities when a japanese enemy frigate attacked and destryed my fighers. Nevertheless, i've never been able to attack land units with my navy.

the key to this conversatino is that the units are in a friendly/nutral city when the event occurs

Can someone test if water units can attack enemy land units in friendy/neutral coastal cities?

Since you can move units into friendly cities, your enemy can too. When this occurs, it is just like a battle playing out. If you have air units and an enemy land unit moves into the city, your air units will be destroyed. Moving a land unit into a city occupied by a sea unit will either result in a battle between the units or the sea unit would be destroyed just like they are destroyed when you conquer an enemy city.
