I need a free, downloadable, single-player game in the strategy genre that is detailed and deep enough to keep me heavily occupied.

OR (less preferabbly)

I need a recommendation for a strategy game that I can buy fairly cheaply that is engaging, deep, lengthy, single-player. Sortof like the civ series in terms of depth, variety, etc... except it doesn't need to be civ. I'm looking for one game that I can buy and play like freaking crazy. I don't want to waste money buying more than one game.

It does, however, have to be able to run on my PC:

win xp
AMD sempron processor ~1.7GhZ
224mb ram
ATI Radeon xpress 200 series

In other words, not a very good system, so no state of the art crap.

Alpha Centauri (vanilla) and Alien Crossfire (expansion).

Both cheap and deep like Civ. Patche/Workaround exists for running on WindowsXP and newer CPUs.

The only problem is: Can you still find it?

thanks for the tips so far.

The problem I have with SMAC is that I already had it and for whatever reason I usually get bored with it.

The problem I have with that Wesnoth game is that its graphics aren't good enough for an ADD kid like me.

I'm actually considering buying civ3 again (lent it to a friend and he lost it). Are there any non sid-meier games that I can buy that are all cool and strategic like that?

Google this game and download it immediately - The Sandbox of God. It is a strategy game and it will keep you busy.

Well I decided not to risk buying something crappy or downloading something boring and just went and bought vanilla civ3.. would have bought the complete edition or whatever but i'm trying to cut back my expenditures

he doesn't live in the same state anymore... I'll but him when I see him

Take a peek at Europa Universalis II. I've seen it for around £5, and it introduced me to the wonderful world of Paradox, which has some very good games.

It may take a while to get into though, and I fully admit it's hardly for everyone. If you do though, you'll be theirs for life ;)

Take a look at this thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=130751 for an idea as to how the game works (I'm sure Pyotr won't mind me linking to his thread)
