HELP ME PLEASE!

OK I used to play this game all the time, but have not played in years. I have civ1 for windows and cant figure somethign out. I remember on Dos version I used to be able to buy advancements. Like say when you desperately need settlers but there are too many turns or it is taking too long to make, I remember I used to be able to buy it. But I cant seem to figure out how to do so on this. I can sell my stuff like barracks and palace and stuff but I am totally lost.... please help me, I cant seem to do very well without this...
thanks!

This is how it should work:
Click on the city that is producing the unit or improvement and the city menu will open. Then click on the button city on top of the screen and a menu will drop down. In this menu click on the option buy unit/improvement and the next turn you will have your unit/improvement.

Aaargh! What's wrong with good old civ1 dos?? Nobody but me seems to be able to get that working in windows?:crazyeyes

I've used DOS, and to much enjoyment. But when I found Windows, I liked it more. The information was easier to find, and I noticed that those advisors, notably the Trade and Science, should be checked with regularly. Oh, and it's a bit faster, with different, though not necessarily superior (OK, superior) graphics. I've been playing a lot lately, mostly on the Prince difficulty, and having measured success. In my latest game, I'm the Greeks on an out-of-the-way continent, just off the big one (where ALL of the other civs are, or were, located). Now it's just me, the Zulus, and the Egyptians. The Egyptians and I are Republics, zooming ahead in the tech race (it's 1350, my first Ironclads just came into use, Cannons are not new, but they're a little behind, but then again, as an island power I was focusing on naval military research), while the Zulus plod along, trying to keep up. I think they are still a Despotism, though they may be a Monarchy. Anyway, I must say that the Windows version is quite preferable.

well, is still use good ole' dos civ, except i really do want to get civnet or civ 4 windows cause it actually runsSLOWER!!!! in win98 on a pentium II than even a 286!!! why? if anyone else experiences this problem, it runs a normal speed if u use the computer speaker effects not Soundblaster!

The fastest way to play civ1 is in true, true DOS (from a boot disk, as in other topics) and on a fast pentium computer. The game flies. Units on "Go" zoom across the screen. The game can even keep up with me ;) sometimes I get a little fast with those keyboard commands but it doesn't beep out on me.
