I got used to the unit movements in FreeCol and now I back to Col for Windows.

I have two Dragoons and a Scout in a city and I cannot figure out how to get them out it. They are at the gate (outside the colony), but are NOT selectable ala FreeCol. I tried the usual trick of turning them into farmers or pioneers and then back to being outside the gate, but this still does not make them selectable.

According to the manual the way to get a unit on a ship is to select a SENTRY order. However this will not work if you cannot select the unit, ie it is not perceived as really being outside the gate.

Until I get some help Col for Windows is going to collect some serious dust.

If the unit is standing at the gate with no current orders and is available this turn then it will be activated as you cycle through your units.

If it is a newly created unit it will not be available until the next turn. This would be the case if you turned it into a farmer then put it outside the gate again, and it is also the case if you click on the unit as it stands outside the gate. Apparantly that is still seen as a colony action.

The correct way to access the unit is to click on the unit icon (middle of three icons on the lower right of the colony screen) to bring up the 'units present' box. Then when you click on a unit in this box you get a choice of actions such as 'clear orders', 'move to front' etc. If it is fortified use 'clear orders'. If you want to move it immediately select 'move to front', even if it is already at the front. Note that if you fortify a unit and then clear orders it will not be available until the next turn.

So life isn't meant to be easy. But hey it's a 12 yr old game and it still has great gameplay even if the interface could use a little work.

hmm its older than 12 years, its 13years old

if anyone else gets stuck the Units Present box he mentions may work. I did not know unit orders could be given here until getting this reply. the program code obviously has a flaw if units at the gate are not automatically selectable without having to open this box - oh well, sigh.
