need help with smac cpu problems

ok heres the deal, i hadnt played the game in a couple years. i loaded smac (i dont have alien crossfire) on my pc with windows xp. it worked good enough, crashing once in awhile, and i couldnt see the boxes that pop up when i open the game (but the one on the left made the game work so that was ok.).
but i remembered playing it years ago it had more features on the map. so i loaded some update that had the alien monument thing that boosts your planet rating. BAD MOVE! now i cant start the game, i open it and it says
it dont work with my cpu and that it might crash, i click ok and it just closes....thats it! grrr im not that computer savvy so someone please help a dummy out!

Go to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and open the file named "Alpha Centauri.ini". Insert the text "ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1" (Or, if "ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0" is already there, change the 0 to a 1.)

That should make it work.

Fraxis released a patch for windows 2000 and XP a few years ago. have you installed that? Its not a full blown patch and the readme says only to install if yours does not run or you play multiplayer with someone who has the patch.
