Never get to really make use late game tech - simple mod needed!

Hi All,

Civ 4 is a great game and I love the tweaks since Civ 3 that have been made to it to reduce micromanagement and improve the game strategies.

I have only one major gripe, it seems the early game is reasonably paced it's quite a long time between getting newer and harder units etc. Though when I play into the late era the game usually ends before I really get a chance to use all those air and sea weapons that I suddenly seem to have.

You seem to be able to research better units before you can even build the ones you only just got. The effect on the game in my opinion is that half of the tech tree is wasted and whilst it has an impact on the game etc. you don't really get to make full use of it and i'm sure if you did it would be great.

We could make a mod that goes and ups all the tech costs for higher techs but this may cause imbalance when cultural victory is enabled.

I'm hoping to start a discussion to decide exactly how we should mod the game to solve this singular problem! Any suggestions.
 
Well, some people have already modded in higher tech costs for later eras, I don't know how much success they have met with but it does seem like the easiest solution.

I think the idea would be to combine increasing tech costs, and changing victory conditions slightly. For example, to require a greater number of space ship parts, and have them cost more to build, as well as perhaps to slightly increase the amount of culture needed for a cultural victory. Diplomatic I hate anyway; I don't know if it's possible, but perhaps new techs could introduce new possibilities for UN resolutions, which would also mean you'd need to get to a later tech before you can go for diplo victory? I don't know about that idea because I never go for a diplo win, so I can't make fair comment on it. (Nevertheless, that idea might work well combined with the ideas for a SMAC-esque extension to Civ 4.)

I'm also thinking of making my own mod which increases tech, building, and wonder costs, but leaves units as they are. The problem of course is whether or not AI will make sensible choices based on the new values...
