New Luxury Resources (Speculation)

With the advent of international trade routes and the ability for the World Congress to ban certain luxury goods, I think there could be room for new luxury resources.

My question is, what new luxury resources might they include and what would they have to do to re-balance the happiness system to handle more luxuries?

I think they could include such luxuries as:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Tobacco
  • Cocoa
  • Poppy (the fact that this can be turned into opium would make it a realistic bannable good)
  • Hemp (the fact that this can be turned into marijuana would make it a realistic bannable good)

As for re-balancing, I think if they merely reduced the effect of luxury good's bonus to +3 or even +2 :c5happy: they could counteract the effect of adding more luxuries.

The reason why I think they ought to add more is because it would make for a more varied market in terms of what you could trade for.

In addition to adding more luxuries, I think it would also be a good idea to restrict each continent or section of a Pangaea to only have a particular mix of luxury resources exclusive to that area, so that trade is promoted.

So far as trading is concerned, I do hope that the AI is a little more willing to engage in trade... feels like I'm constantly twisting arms to get the AI to deal with me.

Countries banning hemp wouldn't be particularly realistic considering the uses it has (archaeologists even use its pollen to detect human settlements), and isn't exactly luxury. Everything else sounds great though, and you could break up Spices into multiple luxuries, as well.

It's a US thing. The realistic part is that it would cut into the capitalistic stats quo, so we pretend it is evil and ban it for moral/health reasons.

I doubt it would ever make it into the game.

Definitely agree with tea, that has been a huge tradeable goods for an extremely long time.

It would be pretty interesting if they introduced some late-game wonders that produce a unique luxury resource that could be traded.
Considering the heavy trade focus of this new expansion back.

Think cars being exported from Japan.

It'd be nice something along these lines, but not wonder-related. Perhaps a building that transforms strategic and/or luxury resources into a manufactured luxury resource. Eg.: Oil+ Aluminium +Iron=Cars

Chili Peppers :p

I'd like Maize to make it, but it wouldn't be a luxury resource. :)

Luxury Resources: Caviar

Bonus (always wanted an improoved desert and arid regions gameplay, so):
Camels (desert tiles),
Buffaloes (same as cows, but near (not on) desert or on desert near plains),
Antelopes (something like Deers but also on desert near plains or vice versa).

I would like to see some more bonus resources (more for varieties sake than anything else).

Also maybe some more strategic resources, it seams you get a whole bunch at the start then nothing, then a whole bunch in the industrial age then nothing, so maybe something in between.

I wouldn't mind some more luxuries like tea (I love it when the Tea is ready) but given the great number I certainly won't be disappointed if there isn't any new ones

I like this idea. It would give some use for the strategics that have been outmodded by the end of the game like Iron and Horses.

I think such a small change keeps the game fresh. Replayability in a game like Civ largely comes from random elements making each game feel different. The new ones from G&K were great and even now I'm still enjoying seeing copper or citrus instead of the same gold, silver, cotton...

As silly as it sounds, I think the addition of new luxuries has nearly as much impact as new Civs.

I'm also expecting some new luxury resources, but not much. Two or three.
As already was mentioned, coffee, tea and cacao are obvious luxury resources.
But from a gameplay point of view it wouldn't make sense as they all are calendar resources, so I'd expect only one or two of those resources. I'd expect at least a mining resource too.

Another trapping resource would be nice. As much as I hate needing to deviate from tech paths on the way to National College or colosseum/markets, the game could use a few more trapping luxuries.

Thank you, anandus, for this statement! I couldn't agree more!

I think they need a good balance of the existing luxury constructions (Mining, Trapping, Sailing and Calendar). Maybe add one of every tech?

Mining: Tin? I not too sure on a good one Mining.
Trapping: Leather
Sailing: Corals
Calendar: Tea, although cocoa can be a second choice.

Leather and coral are both pretty big things that are being frowned upon right now, so it could fit with the Congress and the entire expansion.
