Neat map, although it changes the game more than I could have imagined. Since you don't have horses or Iron in the early game (even if you get lucky and find an Iron on a island you can't add it to your trade network until Navigation), early combat is very difficult. An eartly warrior gambit won't work, since there are 4 civ on a large map, so by the time your warriors find another civ, there are too many spearmen around. Nobody can really efectively attack until Invention is developed and you get Longbowmen with a 4-attack rating. If I'd been thinking about it, I would have chosen to play as the Indians, so I could roll over the rest of my continent with War Elephants when I researched Chivalry.
It's a neat idea, but I think that the middle game is a little tedious. I'm just spending all my time right now sending Galleys across the oceans to settle islands that may or may not have resources later. I think the Industrial Age will be a blast when I get to it. There are four very even civs right now, and when Navigation kicks in and we all start getting resources from our islands, it's going to get really messy. I'm just not certain I'm going to have the patience to wait that long.
Suggestions for those playing the map :
1) Don't play with the Indians, but don't let the AI play the Indians either. They will kicks ass, and it will either be too easy to win, or too frustrating to see you spearmen get crushed by hordes of rampaging elephants.
2) Play on a level where you are fairly even with the AI. If you've got twice as many citites as the other AI on your continent when you meet in the middle, it will be too easy to dominate the world. With that type of advantage, you could probably just throw archers at spearmen ovewr and over again until you finally overwhelm your opponent. That won't work if you're close to evenly matched.
3) Early expansion is the key to winning on this map. Granaries are a must in your core five cities around the capital that won't experience much corruption.
Cool map Joe, thanks. I think I might try the same type of idea, except on a Small map, to try and cut down on the middle game slow down.
