Hello Everyone,

This thread is your place to voice the kinds of projects you would like to see
happen for Civ I. That could be anything from improvements to current aspects of the game, new utilities, online play, or clones of the game.

Please post to the Lack of Civ I sites if you have ideas for the Civ I pages
at CPH but post here for the new developments you would like to see for
Civ I.

Feel free to make your suggestions and we can even talk out the details.

Best to all,

CivPartisan

Hey Guys,

So what are you saying here...there are no projects needed? You have all the scenario tools you could possibly need?

I for one want to see a full blown scenario editor...I want a way to change graphics, sounds, and text in the game. I want to build a modpack for Civ...preferably, CivDOS.

Maybe I'm just dreamin...again.

Well how about a CivWiki project?

A little encyclopedia with articles on everything:
The Settler Cheat, The Lost Spaceship bug, trade routes,
the Wonders and so on.

Did Trada try this already?

A civwiki project ::slaps self on the forehead:: what a great idea!

I can't believe I didn't see that comin'. Well, there you have it...that's why I started this thread...

I know that a lot of you have excellent ideas for Civ I and all these things could be possible. Now, anyone interested in heading up the CivWiki project? It could mean fame (not fortune, sorry).

Kudos to Gundus. And Trada, did you start this already?

Best to all,

Yeah, I did. Uh, but nobody really gived or cared about it. Much like TTG guy's old Hall of Fame. But that was way before any of our time (cept IC maybe ;) )

http://civilization.wikispaces.com/

Actually I've scored well over 2000 main page views and 6! members. But all anybody ever added to it was a civ profile of themselves and correct a few spelling errors. Oh! And I emailed the legendary TTG guy (the guy who created the civ1 part of this site, posted many wise posts in this forum and generally was probably the best and hardcorest civ1 player ever. In other words... a great legend from years back and now all we have is his posts)
Anyway, I emailed him and asked if I could have permission to use his material on my wiki. He said yep. Thus the gear from the civ1 section of the site pasted onto the wiki. Feel free to change that too ;)

Any help would be great! :) I think we need to clear up/change around the main page a bit. As some of the links are silly. Everybody, feel free to join, add pages, take away pages and change to your hearts content. It belongs to me, yes. But I want the whole civ1 community to have stewardship of it :)

However, if you take away a page or add a page.. please discuss it on the dissicion pages first ;)

HAHAHAHA!!!

trada...that is great to hear...TTG is cool and you are right, he is a legend from years back...I know because I used post with him here on CivFanatics folks. In fact, I've pretty much been with CivFanatics from the beginning (I used to post in the old forum before the forum...when there was no Civ I page or php. I still miss the old logo with the little fanatic (you can see it on my website now though).

I'm glad Greg said ok to all that great stuff on the page. But the Wiki is a great thing and I encourage everyone to join in the fun. There is so much out there that can be added. There was also a Civ I for Atari ST -- people should be offering info on that. And I really haven't seen much on SNES and I have the game for that too. I'll look to see if I have the booklet or try to find a download of the booklet somewhere.

Well, this has turned into a very fruitful thread people. If you don't mind trada, I will add the wiki link to my website too.

Post your ideas people...things are hot right now!

Cheers,

CivPartisan

I would be honoured, CivPartisan :)

Hey trada,

I've got the new link up on the main page and placed a news feature on the front page too with links. We can get everyone in on the fun! See for yourself right here.

Cheers,

CivPartisan

Wow. Thanks mate.

But guys remember, this wiki ain't worth anything unless we add to it.

Honestly, anything will do. Well, as long as it's about civ1 ;)

Me? I'm busy as exams are looming. In the holidays then, yeah, I'll work on the wiki a lot. But till then, you guys have fun :)

I vaguely remember TTG Guy. Seems he had a strategy guide, too. It would be wonderful if we could see all the things he wrote for Civ1.

Would he be interested in making an appearance again on the forum?:)

On your wiki, I could not find anything yet of his that you may have included.

I think I have his material on my site in the about civ1 section. ;)

And yeah, I emailed him about his guide and/or making an appearence on this forum.. unfortunetely, he is at a really busy period of his life and can't do either :| However, I managed to get him to promise to dig up and email his stradegy guide.. one day..

IMO hack-type mods wouldn't be able to really bring "second breath" to Civ 1. A full-scale remake should've been made a long time ago. WinXP-compatible, with much larger maps, reformed battle system, better AI, complex scenarios, customizable graphic icons and gameplay parameters... Have a lot of plans for such one, but have no time to really start coding it ...

Have you checked out the Civ I Clone for DOS - Antiquity 2.7 thread? I believe you can get the source also (but it's in Pascal, so I understand if wouldn't want to deal with it). I want to get a team together to do these things you speak of--it's possible and can happen if people help.

Anyone can help in fact. Things like creating a simple flow chart or documents and producing sounds/graphics can generate an archive of work that would attract coders. Most of the time, a coder needs images, sounds, and text to work with that usually takes as much time to create as the code itself. If these things can get started, then developers would be more willing to sign on. I am speaking to everyone and anyone who reads this.

I would also like to point out that this is a 2-D game. It is not a complex iso-metric or polygonal game like some of the free games that have mass following. I know that a game would possible because FreeCOL is out there and it is a great 2-D game.

Okay, enough of the motivation...when can I play the sequel?

Yeah, I've stumbled upon Antiquity few years ago. Unfortunately, it's still an early alpha. I know Pascal, but I think there's no much sense in coding a game under it while you can do the same things much quicker and easier with Delphi. Also, although Antiquity is close to CIV DOS, it is a different game. What I plan to do (in some undetermined future) is:
1) Complete WinXP-port of CIV DOS (bug-correction only).
2) Extended and improved game based on this port (with original CIV DOS graphics, sounds, etc.)

Hello Folks,

You know I've been thinking...

I'd really like to see a new project any way. We could build our own civ game. Make it a Civ I sequel ourselves. Maybe we could call it Civ-2D.

I think it would be to the advantage of programmers if this kind of project could be done modular. In other words modules can be produced separately (so long as they follow certain limits of course) like graphics, sounds, text panels, AI and so on by separate teams or individuals. This way it would be a living game and changes could be made easily to work out the bugs and it could be updated and modded much easier. By using this method we might even produce the game more quickly.

Just think about it. It could actually be built as a hot seat game at first, then LAN multiplayer could added and eventually internet support. The AI would take some doing, but if its modular then the AI could be interchangeable. I saw something like with another project called Civ-Evo which seems to have lost momentum.

Another advantage to this approach is that we would be building a game engine that could become different games as well. This engine could also be a turn based Starcraft clone or Age of Empires clone. The possibilities are endless.

Just a few thoughts from the old guy at the computer...

Hello again,

It appears that TTG is not answering his email these days or has moved on to other things. I will probably post the rest of what I do have in the week or so to come and get some more downloads for Civ I going on my own time.

Also, for those of you who remember Colonization, I've done updates here.

Best to all,

CivPartisan
