Do you think the new game should have new and/or improved resources? Luxuries, strategic, and bonus?

I think a new luxury resource could be chocolate (or would that fit under spices?).

I also think gold should be obtainable by colonies, rather than just a commerce bonus.

Should some luxury resources become "obsolete"? Nowadays, for example, we dont really use natural dyes much anymore, and stuff like silk is being replaced by synthetics.

Soooooo, whaddya you think....

The only thing I would change is maybe add manufactured goods. Once the industrial age comes around there should be a shift from natural luxuries to manufactured luxuries.

You can do that with an increase in gold allowing you to turn up the luxury slider.

I don't think luxes should go obsolete for balance purposes. The guy who gets a wad of 8 golds will be made for the entire game while the guy who gets spices will be screwed over later on.

If some luxuries go obselete, you need replacements. Simple.

I kinda like the idea that each luxury has its day. this way you cannot rely on the same pig to make you rich forever, but you can use the money to invade someone with the next big resource. Or maybe get really far ahead in tech. In Civ 2 hills were only okay until the second half of the game where they become super factory tiles.

i disagree with the "expiration" of resources, but agree there should be more resources and luxuries available (maybe not chocolate), if not it will probably be fairly easy to do it in the editor.

OK, I don't think there should be ab absolute 'expiration' date on luxuries, but I DO feel that luxuries which appear much earlier in the game should lose their effectiveness as the game progresses-forcing the player to discover new luxuries as the game progresses and/or producing manufactured 'pseudo-luxuries' like cars, computers and fast food! The most important reason for this IMHO, is that it means it is less likely that a player can win the game whilst going it TOTALLY alone-by placing far greater emphasis on trade and cooperation!

Tea & Coffee should be new luxuries. Seriously. :) Tea especially, because it was very important to countries like Britain, China, and Japan.

Medicinal Plants- These give healing bonuses and maybe make hospitals cheaper or halve their upkeep. Certainly should give a happy face or two.

Mineral water- odd one this but nowadays fresh spring water is a big commercial
enterprise.

Expensive woods maybe- ebony, which have to be on a jungle/forest square andcan't be cut if you want to keep it.

Minerals. A general commodity covering salt, quartz, rocks etc. Actually you don’t ever find Aluminium in a natural ore state but in a mineral non metallic compound. They already have aluminium but minerals still covers other raw chemicals/compounds.

Chocolate would be the cocoa bean, only found in jungles, but I think all herbs/beans/luxury food items are really covered by spices even though there not strictly speaking spices.

Too many different types of resource in a single game would reflect reality but might unbalance the game. Perhaps if only a fixed random number should be available each game.

A modded version of civ has cocaine.

Tobacco of course.

How about adding Platinum and silver to the precious metals list. So each time the game is seeded there is still the same about of gpt to but has more silver than gold and even less platinum which gives an ever greater yield. Can’t do this with gems as they are lux resource.

Coral (not the same as rocks) for a sea resource or lobster/caviar as another lux sea food.
