New Unit: Saab J35 Viggen

Viggen... just like mama used to make it... it's so beautiful...
BeBro is truly Hoch- und Deutschmeister of the Modern Aircraft Graphics Order :worship:

PS it's not a J35 or a J37, it's a AJ37 Viggen! :grad:

PPS ok, for you buffs who know your way around Swedish Air Force aircraft, it could also be an AJS37 or the SH37, but never a JA37 because only few of these have used anything else but grey camo and all have extended fins :nono:

PPPS for those who are not acquainted with swedish designations; J means Jakt (interception), A means Attack and S means Spaning (reconnaissance, added H for Hav means naval reconnaissance). First letter gives primary task, so AJ37 Viggen is an attack aircraft with interception capability. Easy, isn't it? :crazyeye:

WOOOHOOO Ive got a spot already for it so Im not going to start a new game till tomorow when you post it. thanks

In Steph's mod, I try to differenciate between interceptor and fighter bomber, and between carrier base and land base version.

Can one of the Swedish / Danish / Norwegian air force specialist give me some hints about that (sorry for National pride, but I have only one Scandinavian civ, and I mix flavour units from this 3 nations...).
What should I use for an Interceptor, a Fighter Bomber, a naval Interceptor, and a naval fighter bomber for Scandinavia, between all the available air units?

My 2 öres worth:

Of the modern aircraft done for Civ3, there's three used in Scandinavia: Gripen by Pesoloco, Viggen and F-16 by BeBro.
Denmark and Norway use their F-16s in both interception and fighter-bomber roles, just like Sweden uses the JAS39 Gripen for everything except anti-submarine warfare and air transport :D. The Viggen was built in several versions, and the one done by BeBro is best representing the AJ37/AJS37; an attack aircraft/fighter-bomber.

No scandinavian country has ever operated an aircraft carrier so no clue there, but all three mentioned are used for anti-shipping tasks armed with ASM (Norway uses Penguin on their F-16s, Sweden uses RBS15 on both Viggen and Gripen).

So... the F-16 or the JAS39 Gripen could be used for all land-based roles, and the Viggen is a great-looking fighter-bomber. Since F-16 is of american origin and Gripen is indigenous to Scandinavia since it's made in Sweden, I would choose Gripen as interceptor and Viggen as fighter-bomber even if I wasn't a proud nationalistic bastard ;).

Now older aircraft, there's only the Gloster Gladiator by Aaglo used by both Norway and Sweden in battle (norwegian pilots against the germans and swedish volunteers in Gladiators lent by the Swedish Air Force against the russians in the Finnish Winter War). After WW2 the P-51 Mustang was bought by Sweden and the Spitfire (the original fighter of Vanilla Civ3) by Denmark and Norway. No prop bombers used by scandinavian countries has been made for Civ3 to my knowledge :((Ju-86 anyone?).

In a geographical sense Finland is not a part of Scandinavia, but historically and culturally it's been linked to us for a very long time. So if Finland counts, you could add the F-18 and the MiG-21 by BeBro and the Me-109 by several artists. The Gladiator was also bought by the Finns and used to good effect against the Soviet aggressor.

End of lecture. Any questions? :grad:->:crazyeye::p:ack::eek::sleep:

Some additions too Wolfhart great lecture here :D

Sweden has used the Spitfire PR Mk XIX as a recon plane, 50 of em.

And if you hold out a bit, the SAAB 17 and SAAB 18 bombers will be available as units.

And as for the JA 37 designation of the Viggen, they were 149 produced in that purpose in C and D versions.
