The Corner Shot device can be used with any handgun and enables the user to shoot with maximum accuracy while keeping out of the line of fire. Using a camera on the gun barrel, a soldier can swivel the device to point at a target without breaking cover.

The US-Israeli firm that developed the weapon says it will only be sold to official government agencies. A spokesman for the Florida-based Corner Shot Holdings said the device, which was developed and manufactured in Israel, had already been sold to 15 countries.

Amos Golan, a veteran of Israeli anti-terror units who invented the Corner Shot, said customers included the US, Russia and several European armies.

Urban warfare

The weapons system, which costs between $3,000 and $5,000, was officially unveiled at a firing range near Tel Aviv.
The camera attached to the gun barrel can focus on targets up to 400 metres away and can be used with any military pistol. It can also be adapted to fit an M-16 rifle or a tear gas launcher.

Mr Golan said he came up with the idea after an Israeli army operation during the first Palestinian uprising in the late 1980s, when several Israeli officers stormed a house through the front door and were injured by gunfire from inside. He said it was ideal for urban warfare conditions where troops needed to aim at targets without hurting civilians.

"I believe from what I have seen and heard that it can be a big success in Iraq because the Americans are dealing with an urban area there," he said.

I've heard aboout something like this....maybe not this exact weapon, but yes, it will be a great help to soldiers....now they don't have to take their chances and expose themselves to fire.

Would also be very useful for SWAT teams and the like, that seemingly always have to go around corners.

How is the bullet able to turn a 45 degree angle???

It doesn't, the bullet fires near the turning joint... so technically the gun is at the end of the weapon.

Didn't the germans attempt something like this in WWII?

I think he means just after the turning point.
Looks cool and useful.

I read about that gun on the BBC this morning.

Perhaps technology will finally begin revlutionizing the infantry soldier in the same way it did the air force and navy, for the West.

I do not see this making it into mainstream combat.

Er, Gannon, in case you weren't aware, we train our soldiers to be machines. The first thing you get at Marine boot camp is the "Kill! Kill! Kill!" mantra.

This is the way it's been throughout history! Soldiers HAVE to be impersonal killing machines who don't think about [or hopefully even see] the people they're killing. Otherwise you end up like Kurt Vonnegut or George Orwell. A menace to the American Way.

hopefully in the future our soldiers will uses robots more to check corners and buildings. i wonder how easy/hard it is to find a target with the gun's camera

Such a short barrel makes me wonder if this is accurate enough to be worth it. Doesn't look like more than a pistol.

My reaction is similar to Will Smith in Men in Black.

I have to get me one of those!

And it'll never fall into the wrong hands.
How long before some 2nd amendmenters demand it be sold to their pet nut militia, for instance?

That is exactly what it is, a pistol mounted on a hinge. I think it is reported as being accurate for up to 200 yards. Not a large range, but seeing as its application will be in Urban areas, probably enough.

That's pretty neat. They're still working on a gun that always shoots the other guy in the back, in the spine, when he ain't looking.
