Hello All,
I am new to civ, -- have a question about diplomacy -- can you and another computer civ team up together to attack another civ -- because the computers always team up against me with embargo's, war etc..but can I team up with computer
--also, how do you setup trade with another civ?
I have a harbor galley etc...
Right now in my current game (im Babylonian), the french, japanes and russians have declared war on me...my cities, spread over one small continent with only me..and other cities on island--
All 3 computer bastard civs are trying to eradicate me...should i just agree to their demands and make truce? or try to battle them, which i think may not work against 3 civs (~1971 AD)
--appreciate the advice in advance,
cheers,
:king:

Well first the other civs may be attacking as a last ditch effort to stop you from winning. It happens if you have a big lead over the others.
To sign alliances establish an embassy by pressing CTRL+E. You have to pay some cash, around 100. THen you can sign alliances and later once you discover nationalism you can sign embargoes and mutual protection pacts.

Still need some more advice -- how do you sign trade agreements and mutual protection pacts
--at the foreign advisors screen, its got colored lines to the various civs, and at the right side, a menu with checkboxes next to right of passage, war/peace treaties etc...do you simply check one of these boxes to read a diplomatic agreement?
=More advice would be greatly appreciated
cheers,
:king:

btw, i do have an embassy in one of the other civs -- and have attained nationalism -- how do i use the embassy?
--
thanks

One of the easier ways to use that embassy, for me at least, is to double click the star icon (the capital icon) next to your city name on the map. A listing of the civs you currently can open an embassy with (and the prices for each) pops up.
Or...
...you can use the box on the lower right hand side of your screen (the box with the unit information). On the right side of that box are various letters, 'E' is used for embassy/espionage activities. Click that.

Once you get an embassy established, you can access that particular embassy by clicking on the star icon (on the map) of the computer's capital city (for example; France's capital is Paris - on the map, Paris will have a star icon next to it - click that.)

Hope this helps.

ok, I think this is what you are asking about, On the foreign advisors screen, double click on the civ thay you want to trade with, or set up an allience or mutual pact. then offer it in the "propose a deal" screen. hope that helps

--any advice on how to destroy other civs, for example;
you want to destroy 3 other civs who most likely will team up,
do you fight them?
fight them one by one?
or not fight at all, and win by expansion/domination?
?
cheers,

That's a tough question, elastikone, and depends on a lot of things, but I'll give it a go...

Ideally, you'll always want to fight one civilisation at a time. History shows this well, as generations of German generals dreamed of the 'one-front war', and repeatedly paid dearly for failing to achieve this.

Chances are, they all hate your guts and want to eradicate your civilisation from the face of the earth, so you'll probably face two, if not all three in your inevitable war. Giving them tribute may help prevent this, but at times I've given an enemy tons of gold and technology, and they'll still attack the next turn. Dogs...

Considering all that, and the fact that a cultural victory is often dependent on a war of annihilation (in my humble experiences exclusively on Huge maps), to win the game you'll have to prepare for war.

So much of what to do depends on the layout of your world, and also your technology level. Since you own a continent by yourself, prevent transport landings by investing in a naval coast guard, Battleships in particular. Obviously, you'll need transports to establish beachheads on enemy continents, escorted by naval units and loaded with Modern Armour and Mechanised Infantry (if you can get them).

As to who to pick on first, go for your nearest neighbour possibly if they're all about the same size, and concentrate your efforts on this one civilisation. You'll need all the offensive strength you can muster to swiftly destroy them, but this means that defence will be important because the other civs WILL attack you.

If you don't have all this prepared, you may have to delay war for a while to build your forces, so giving tribute may be necessary if they demand it (I find this important on high-difficulty games, actually), but if you're already quite a military power, tell them where to go! :D Long live Babylonia!

I hope my insane ramblings help you! :)
