creating an internal network of roads(within your empire) was obviously the good thing to do in Civ 5 is this still important in Civ 6?

also

I often find despite having thousands of faith points I am unable to buy units, is this calculated on a per city basis?

Some people prefer internal trade which gives food and production ass opposed to externals for gold, science etc.
Make your choices, personally I find the externals better. With VI things are situational, there is no always rule for most things.

You cannot just buy soldiers with faith, learn your governments... or civs. You can only buy when you have the right stuff like monumentality in a golden age to buy settlers with faith.

thank you :) the faith purchases is units like Missionaries & Apostles despite 1000s of faith in the bank I cannot buy units

You can only buy a missionary in a city that has your religion and has a shrine. You can only buy an apostle in a city with your religion and a temple.

You can buy a missionary or apostle in a city that has any religion, not just your own. Something to be aware of so you don't start accidentally spreading someone else's.

Yes, good point. But the missionary or apostle will be of that city's religion. If you founded your own religion (which I implicitly assumed the poster was asking about) and want missionaries and apostles of your own religion, make sure that your religion is the majority religion in the city where you make your purchases.
