Is there really going to be a great deal of difference between the "correct" one and the "incorrect" one at civ scale?

I say give him an Ethiopian sword!

I agree that the difference between a Ninjato (whether historical or not) and a wakizashi would be minimal at civ-scale. I would imagine that the ninja is more likely to use a thrust than a swipe, so would recommend a stabbing anim. With a comparatively small sword I would also argue for a one handed grip - I would think that the ninja would want to keep the other hand free for a variety of other uses.

I think that a pair of the Sai that Hikaro posted would look very good at civ scale personally. Quite distinctive, and there are fewer doubts about whether they're authentic.

Not quite...the thing is, the handle of the historic ninjatos were, just as Shiro presented, the same as any other katana handle. That means, that potentially, one would wield it in much the same manner as a normal katana, at least what the gripping technique is concerned.

Yeah.... It's kind of funny, but a LOT of both Ninja and Okinawan weaponry started out as tools....

The Sai were originally Pitchforks (cut two of the tines down and take off the handle), the Kunai were originally trowels (most likely the mason's type, but they could have arisen from a gardener's/farmer's trowel as well), the Kusarigama combines a fisherman's net weight, a lehngth of chain and a farmer's rice-harvesting sickle... The Okinawans also double-wielded plain sickles in one of their martial arts.

Also, in this list of implements turned weapon are the Nunchaku (rice threshing implements) and Ton-fun (Tonfa), which were originally handles for working some kind of mill stone or rice grinding dohikey.

However Ninjas do it, they do it wrong. Any Piratical method is inherently better.
