...except there is.

Yesterday, I installed some RAM on my PC, went fine, took 2 minutes, works grand etc. But, since doing so, the computer claims I have no sound device installed. It's just not there in my device manager. I opened up, tried to see if anything had come loose, the sound card is integrated and not a removable one, nothing unplugged, scratched or otherwise damaged, but it still says no sound device exists (note,: it doesnt say it's not installed, it says it cant detect it at all).

Any ideas?

Is it disabled in your BIOS? Your BIOS might have automagically deactivated it when you installed your RAM.

Hmm... I tried going into BIOS (first time ever, so if you can reply again, no jorgon please), and couldn't see anything relating to sound in BIOS. What should I be looking for?

Well, if it's onboard, it should have something in the BIOS related to onboard sound. Usually it's only there so that if you installed a new sound card you can disable/re-enable the onboard sound. Someone else can probably instruct you better on where to look in the BIOS, since I haven't been into one in a long time either, but if you still have the manual it might be in there (although motherboard manuals are usually rubbish). Might be worth just googling your motherboard's BIOS maker (e.g. American Megatrends, Phoenix, etc), since they're usually standard systems.

Don't know if you found it yet. I have a Gigabyte motherboard. The sound controll is listed as Azalia codec. Its under Integrated peripherals.

Thanks for all the help, but its turns out this is a bizarre problem specific to my motherboards and should be fixed by a new soundcard.
