No Muskets and Resources Go Poof!

Here’s a good one for you. I’m interested to see if anyone on this board can explain this. I’m playing a Regent/Large/60% continents game as the Dutch against Babylon, Ottoman, France & Egypt who are set at Normal aggression. I’m in the middle of a war with the Ottoman.

Anyway, I got Gunpowder and was looking forward to keeping some Swiss Mercenaries and building some musketmen. Two Saltpeter resources showed up in my territory and I put a road to one. Luckily, the other one popped up in the middle of a road. I already have Iron.

Here’s the problem: No musketmen. For 3 turns I kept looking on the menu. Then, suddenly, a little box pops up on one of my saltpeter resources (where I just built a mine) and says, “This resource has been exhausted” and poof! It disappears! Exhausted how? I still have the other Saltpeter resource. It has now been 13 turns, I just got Education and am moving toward Astronomy, and still no musketmen of any kind.

Any ideas?

Is the road to the saltpeter connected all the way back to the city where you're trying to build the musketmen? If so, you should see it in the upper left hand of the city display. If it's not there, you don't have it connected properly.

As far as resources being exhausted, it's random. There's a chance (maybe 1:100 or 1:400) or most strategic resources disappearing on any given turn. IIRC, when it does it will appear somewhere else on the map.

You don't need to build musketmen with the Dutch. Their Swiss Mercs are as good as musketmen. :p

BUt... do you mean you cannot build any musketmen at all? Are the Dutch allowed to build them in the first place (Haven't played them before)?

Whether a resource is exhausted or not is completely random. It can even disappear before it is connected.

Doh! You're right. I pulled up some of my old saves from a game I played as the Dutch. The Swiss Mercs replace *pikemen*, but I still couldn't build muskets (not that I'd really want to.) Unfortunately that game ended before I reached the IA. Can the SM's be upgraded to rifles? I hate UU's that take the place of something that can be upgraded and aren't upgradable themselves.

Yes, they can. At least the editor says so (and it is probably 100% accurate) :)

Yes, I believe so, because in the editor the musketman upgrades to the swiss merc (strange huh?) So if you desperately want muskets just pillage your iron source. Though I seriously doubt you would want them, since their only advantage is one extra attack.

The saltpeter does show up on the resource section of my cities and all my cities are road connected. I got the swiss merc before I got the gunpowder tech. I just don't get it. I'll be interested to see what happens when I get metallurgy.

I have noticed one thing in my war with the Ottomans. They won't come near a city with two swiss mercs in it. They'll only attack my units outside the cities. Chickens!

Why would you want muskets as the Dutch? The SMs are twice as cheap and just as good, unless you want to attack with them.

I'm currently playing a game as the Dutch, and am not given the option to build Musketmen. I have both Iron and Salpeter and both are connected to my cities (and show up in my box). I know that SMs are definately upgradeable to Riflemen

You need saltpeter and NO iron. If you have iron, you can build the (superior) Swiss Mercenary.

When a resource has a road to it there is a chance it will disappear (regardless of whether you actually use it or not).

It is one of the things that happens while playing a game. I have had some occasion where I have regained the same resource in another location. Has anyone had a situation where a new resource appears once you have already got the necessary tech? In the Most recent game, playing as the Hittities, a new source of oil was found in my territory.
