No Zone of Control?

I noticed that enemy units slip through my battle lines, and also bypass my forts.

Why did they scrap this useful feature (ZOC)? Even Civ 1 had it, and also Alpha Centauri (still much superior game to Civ4, but not so accessible to the masses).

Did anyone try to petition devs to return it into the game in patches? Forts are rather useless this way.

There is a whole thread dedicated to how to use forts, but they can be used without ZoC. Sure, your enemies can go around them, but that means leaving some of your military units behind them. So do a little raiding from the fort. Hit stragglers/reinforcement, supply lines(improvements) etc. They might not stop the enemy from attacking, but you should be able to make the units he left behind him annoying and maybe force him to spend time taking down the fort to get rid of them.

Yes, but I think the main point of a fort is to force the enemy to attack it. Zone of control was a useful, meaningful feature and I perceive its removal as a significant step backward. This way, you cannot prevent fast units from darting through your lines and pillaging your infrastructure, making military encounters a mess!

It's also not in any way realistic. I'm very glad they scrapped ZOC. But yes, it means you will have to learn to use forts differently.

you can always pick a lakes map and make the sea lvl very high :P so you have lots of choke points on your maps for forts. That way no one is getting buy unless they use transports. Personaly I perfer to use cities instead of a fort for choke points even if the city is just a suck town strickly for miltary purposes but thats just me :P
