Bono better get it. All those other "stars" concerned with the situation in the third world could learn a lot from him.

So who do you expect to see there?

To be quite frank, I'd rather not have a nobel peace prize this time around than hand it out to a number of the people on that list.

Weird list. Chirac don't do what he does for peace, he does it for prestige.

Ahh, the nominees are no good this year. They have all done a mediocre at best job.

It'd be tragically ironic if they gave it to Saddam Hussein.

"President Hussein, we offer you this prize for your efforts to avert a war between Iraq and the United States and King George II. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go give a human rights award to Mu'ammar Qadaffi..."

I bet it will be the Illinois governor, since he is a corrupt politician who did nothing to promote peace. Why make the Noble Peace prize an honor of which one can be proud this year?

Why is a singer on the list? And why Ryan? Is pardoning convicted felons now part of "world peace"? Well, doesn't matter anyway, because after Gorbachev and Arafat recieved the award, it has become rather meaningless...

The Nobel committee stringently opposes the death penalty so of course they'll consider them.

I agree with Sharpe... if they consider Chirac they might as well give it to Hussein. Or perhaps this is Arafats year again...

Why would anyone expect the Nobel Peace Prize nominee list to be worth a tuppeny damn? At least the scientific Nobel Prizes tend to reflect achievement, but the Peace prize has long been a farce.

Most years people get included simply because they've stopped killing people - by the Committee's way of thinking, the 1814 winner (if it had existed then) would have been Napoleon (specially shipped across from Elba to receive the award)...

Toasty has the best idea - if there's nobody who deserves it, simply don't award it. Far better than putting out a list of pointless nominees.

Come on, pope. Who did think I would want to win? Chiric?

Nobody on Earth has actually altruistically worked for peace this year.

Or, for that matter, ANY year.

Remind me again what the point of this prize is???

Wow, pretty sardonic, Troque.

I think this year's prize ought to go to AoA and Lefty Scaveola for keeping order on these forums.

I want to say something in Bono's defense: during the 2001 season's Superbowl Halftime (January 2002, when the Patriots beat the Rams, great symbology), U2 did the half time show which included a tribute to the September 11 victims.

Now September 11 was doubly tough on compassionate liberals; not a lot of time to mourn and be angry when you must immediately warn your Muslim friends of backlash, and then try to ride the "justification" of our military response, keep your eye on the attack on our Constitution, etc. During that halftime Bono sang some old and emotional U2 songs, and at one point he opened his denim jacket to show that the inside had been lined with an American flag. I burst into tears and let out all of the bottled up grief. We're all human.

I didn't see that performance as I was working that day as a tax preparer and trying to explain to low-income filers why $300 was being deducted from their refund and comforting them when they realized that they had already spent their portion of the Bush tax cut. I'm not a fan of Bono and I would never admit which entertainers get me teary eyed, since that would leave me less free to criticize the Bono's of the world.

We've come a long way since that Super Bowl. No Patriots in this post season. When it looked like the Eagles would prevail, we got a Super Bowl full of pirates. Not that I was disappointed. Also, the team formerly known as the Oilers (the Titans) got close to the big dance but did not succeed. There are symbolic warning signs everywhere, if the administration would pay more attention to me when I am prophesizing and less attention to me when I am merely super sizing my happy meal.

I wish we had a world where the Peace Prize was totally meaningless since everybody was already peaceful, but in this society where I can easliy name the winner of every Super Bowl ever played (SB - its easy when you can say the phrase "Dallas Cowboys" five times), but would struggle to name even 10 Nobel Peace Prize winners, I guess the Prize is pretty well marginalized by the mainstream anyway.
