NONE settlers

la fayette, what do you mean? That 3s (2s under desp)and 2f are not provided (which they are) or that 3s and 2f isn't good because you want trade instead (which is quite personal what you like)?

Sorry, I wrote too quickly and didn't notice that Woke26 was referring to a CITY built on a mined hill (which I never do because I consider it almost a cheat, but I don't blame those who use it as long as it is not forbidden).

It's effective for defense, but "the best defense is a spirited offense" - grow faster on grass, keep the badguys away from the city gates. Waste of two, not one, settler getting it to work. Unless you are planning ICSing lots of size 2 cities...

in deity 1x1x you normally have less cities, because of the rioting. those cities that you do have, must be excellent and well protected. In deity you need martial law to keep them happy. that means 3 units in every city. every extra unit you build in king after the 3rd will cost you a shield. this will happen fast, because you need settlers to improve land, triremes and explorers. if you are planning a big offense, upkeep will be extreme.

For all this, in deity it is good to found a city on a mine. you need the extra shields anyway, and you have good defense. the food is not a problem. you get 2 food from founding on a hill. in despotism that is the same speed as grass, in monarchy its 1 food slower, but you can catch up with irrigation fast enough. you build the settlers faster because of the mining.

I’ve founded on hills & founded on the grass. I think that Elephant has the right of it for the first city; the need for defense of the capital should not be that critical early in the game (the ai is “distant” and the world is barb free for 16 turns (+)). And in the mid-game, the capital should be surrounded by other cities that would be at risk from invasion. Two, the second settler spends fifteen turns mining vs. a road, two moves & city #2. City #2 can have ten turns of development underway -- so the math might be more like two food, three shields and 200% defense vs. six food two shields, two arrows and 2 x 100% defense.

I think that other factors may come into play such as an isthmus and/or the center location of four specials -- in those cases, it might be a great city site regardless of the ground underneath. I founded my initial city on a mined hill for my first game at deity (and did OK), but given a free choice, I think that it is better for the first city to be on grass.

Woke, I talk also about deity 1x1x:
I think even with rioting it is better to build cities past 4/6 with more warriors than let them grow. I keep sizes of cities on 1-2 up to first celebrating.

Another problem is you can't micromanage the mine if you have a city on the top: you lose shields with every rushbuy, because you cannot move the mined hills to another city.

Heck, build your capital on a river and get both ElephantU's and woke26's strategy at the same time. Well, not quite the defense bonus, but who's attacking your capital, anyway? The AI?
