Noob question

I've been searching around on the Civopedia and the Wiki and I can't find out what the second combat number means. For example, archers have 3/5. I'm assuming the first number is the traditional civ strength rating.

Second number is defensive value. If they have only one number (as most units do), then their attack and defense strength are the same.
