My mom's computer is having some problems with Norton Antivrius. She has NAV Professional 2004. On her NAV. however, it says that Auto-Protect is not enabled:

But in the taskbar:

I've restarted the computer (to try to load it) and read the help files, but it's no help. Does anyone know what to do, or has experienced something like this before?

My older brothers Computer has Norton on it and when I turned Auto-protect off there was a red X over the norton Icon.

Right. Yet even though Auto-Protect was off according to the first pic, there wasn't a red X in the taskbar icon. So I'm just wondering, what's going on? Does it mean that NAV is on or off?

Assume it's off, and try to turn it on. Maybe it just needs to be toggled.

Of course, if you really wanted to test it....

I tried to enable it, but it didn't do anything. Just stayed at "off." I dunno what this means...

I did have a problem installing McAfee on a computer as the old virus scanner licence had expired without any kind of warning email which was odd since there was no fixed expiry date and McAfee refused to update automatically. The only way was to download updates manually and install them which revealed a virus or two so its possible that there could be a virus stopping Norton from turning on autoprotect.

Test it with the EICAR test virus.

Open notepad and create a text file with any name and extension.

Copy and paste the following line into it, and remember: Don't press ENTER before or after it.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Then try to save the file. If Norton's auto protect is on, it should prevent you from saving it.

You can learn more about EICAR here: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
