Not able to reveal map in Civ III?

Complete newbie here. Just picked up the game yesterday after enjoying Civ II for quite awhile.

Anyhoo, I have the basic Civ III, patched. Doesn't look like there's any way to reveal the map. Am I missing something, or has this been taken out? Any way around it?

Sure. You can reveal the map. It's called "exploring". It's where you move your units around to actually reveal small portions of the map at a time. Once you get Map Making (in vanilla Civ III, which is what I think you have), you can trade for the AI's maps, which are usually pretty good and worth about what they cost.

As for a cheat to reveal the map, I believe that's been eliminated. You can retire and get a get a broad lay of the land or I suppose you could play to the point where you have the whole map revealed and then reload. Neither is very satisfying to suggest. I suggest playing the game as designed. I think you'll find it a lot more fun that way.
