So, last week I started playing Civ V again after a month or so of not playing it. I somewhat neglect my military for the first few turns, as usual, army consisting of starting warrier, 2 scouts and an archer. Now, before my break, I had peacetime, usually until at least the Classical age, usually the Medieval. Now, I'm getting attacked on turn 40, 50.

I'm playing a game on Pangea, modified to have 8 civs and 6 City States, King, resources abundant, no barbs, promo and policy saving on. Same settings as a month ago.

So basically what I'm asking, was there any patch that increased AI aggresiveness lately? I can win the wars and all, it's just annoying as hell not getting my infrastructure up. I'm also running only 1 city during the time they attack me, and friendly with everyone (No DoF's though), I have done nothing to provoke anyone.

Yes, everyone was complaining how the AI was retarted and appearantly Firaxis thinks that declaring war can never be retarted.

Ah ok, that explains it. Still damn annoying though, as I'm a bit of a builder over warmonger :P

Heard good stuff about the VEM mod which is supposed to make the AI a bit less inclined to war itself to death and does numerous balance fixes (specifically to the underpowered units and civs).

Is it in the Mod Broser? I can only find one small one, called Empires Enhanced.

Search for unofficial patch in the mod browser, alternatively I can recommend NIGHTS, it's what I'm using right now.

I fooled around with VEM recently. I was attacked on t40, so I don't know if it does a whole lot to tone down the AI. Mods come with some refreshing changes, but also some new frustrations. For instance, it's real kick in the junk when you find out that the 15 cities you've captured are producing no science and, although you control half the Pangaea, everyone is outpacing you in research by a significant margin.

I've come to accept the diplomacy in this game. You don't really work "with" the AI, so maybe it makes sense that the competition is going to lead to conflict. Controlling the conflicts is the challenge. Is it fun? Sometimes. But most of the time it is, at best, annoying.
