I took to playing Europa Universalis Rome while waiting for Gods & Kings to come out. I hadn't played it before, so I didn't know what to expect.
They did something that I thought was really great, and I'd love to see imported into G&K if at all possible as an alternative to the 1UPT's.*
If you're not familiar with Europa Universalis Rome, what you're looking at there is an army with different units (the Cohorts, which are auto-named from where they come from, and can be renamed at will), and a general. All of these can be added or removed at will from the army/Legion, along with different types of units (such as archers, heavy infantry, and so on. You get the picture).
The numbers in white are the individual unit strength in man-power - So Etruria's 1st Cohort has 569 men, while the 8th right below has 684. They start out at 1000. And, what's even cooler is you can merge units to rebuild unit strength back up to 1000. The Legions/Army's total strength is listed in the upper right hand corner (8387) with the percentage below (5%) being their overall moral, which is reflected in the red/green bar to the left of the general's face.
I can not express how much I love the elegance of this idea. Effectively, the unit's strength is measured in man-power, with 1000 being optimal/full strength. In other words, the unit's hit points are the number of troops it has. For simplicity's sake, for G&K this could be left at 100, but I think adjusting it to the 1000 mark would be grand.
Fleets are handled exactly the same way, with one unit representing one ship in that case.
I would dearly love to see this worked into a mod for G&K. I'm not a coder, otherwise I'd do it myself. As I draw stuff for a living, and I'd be happy to give whomever a print of any of my work that I've done or perhaps do a custom illustration for their time and trouble.
As for "if you like this so much, why don't you just play Europa Universalis instead?"
Because I like Civilization.
*I'm actually not opposed to 1UPT, but it also causes it's own set of headaches, such as carpeting your entire nation in units. Additionally, trying to do any sort of invasion or large troop movement is troublesome as you have to move each troop individually.
