Observer Mode: WTH

So I wanted to observe a friend who's learning the game and give him pointers. But as far as I can tell there is no way to see what he's researching or anything else beyond unit movement. Is this literally nothing more than a map hack or am I missing something. And if so, what's the point?

Yes, its useless, dont be surprised. Many things in civ are made half ass.

Yes you can only see units moving and city placement and nothing else, rather useless as a training tool or for tournaments.....
