I have only tried this once and the result was a forced change of government into fundmentalism though I got the chance to conqour much of the world.

I left a huge gap in the middle my empire with no cities or roads coz I was too busy pushing the enemies' borders back. In the huge gap something like 20-30 squares * 20-30 squares, and several huge rebellions happened at once. I was steady in democracy with Leonardo's Workshop (you need the upgrades), Statue of Liberty (you need to avoid anarchy), and the GoldSmith thingy (you need the money).

Since my nearby cities were all low on units (2 rifleman each) I found the only way to survive was to capture their units and fight them with it. Everytime they get near my cities or walked onto my roads, I send a diplmat to capture the unit and in the same turn I can return the both of them into the city. I have 10 diplmats hurried to the front line in a few turns (railway) and within a few turns, I have 20 to 30 + units, all of them either musketeers, cannons or knights!

with Leonardo's work shop:
musketeers = rifleman
cannons = artillaries
knights = dragoons

Only problem was that as soon as I moved the 30+ units off my cities, they go into riot... This happened to me 3 times throughout the game, always in the same spot

Try it its quick way to victory!

yea, bribing armies of barbarians is one of my favorite tactics while running my decadent empires. Cheap Effective Labor.

have 2 cites have 1 city build settlers(engineers) and build a third city have that build army than when u get more settlers make more cities to make military do it good and no one and i mean now one has an easy shot at defeating u

Bribing enemy closer to their own cities is good because I like the "NONE", and consider that worthe the cost of bribing. Barbs are teh best bargain, however... esp. if leonardo's can still upgrade them. In GOTM 5, my force of cavalry that conquered the world started as barb horsemen. All those nones don't hurt my shield, or affect happiness under Democracy, which is my preferred form of government in most wars.
