I've recently started playing OCC games, and I love it! However, I am at a loss as to how to improve my beginning. I usually hit 2-3 huts before I settle my first city, usually before about 3700 BC. So, when I've built my city, I typically have a couple of military units and a little cash (25-50 gold). I build two warriors and then get to work on the Colossus. Warriors take five turns each to build if the city produces 2 shields, four with 3 shields, three with 4 shields. Therefore, a typical timeline for me will be:
3700 BC Valhalla built (production = 3 shields)
3500 BC Warrior #1 built (production = 3 shields)
3300 BC Warrior #2 built (production = 2 shields, but will jump to 4-5 shields in 1-2 turns, when the city grows to size 2)
My goal is to get Colossus by 2000 BC, which leaves only 22 turns. To accomplish this, I would need production to be an average of 9 shields per turn (this would actually give me only 198 shields in 22 turns). Of course, this ignores cash, but I usually have trouble piling up cash in the beginning of the game. I'll get 2-3 gold per turn from taxes, 50-75 gold from huts, plus whatever I can get from tribute/gifts (by 2000 BC, I usually have contacted 2-3 other civilizations and have one ally). With 4-5 shields per turn, I typically need about 70-80 shields (or more) to finish Colossus when 2000 BC comes by. The only time I was lucky enough to finish Colossus on time, I had managed to get a whopping THIRTEEN military units, most of which I disbanded to get more shields. Needless to say, this was a rare occurrence that I expect to never happen again.
Anyway, enough rambling. I thank you in advance for any advice you can provide.
