I've been experimenting with advanced starts lately, medieval and classical. If you just buy workers and settlers in a 1.5:1 ratio, you'll have an easy game. The AI will waste money on cities and improvements. Especially classical seems really lopsided, you can buy 4 settlers, 6 workers, 2 archers at the start (2000 BC) and still have gold left. The Immortal AI will sit on 3 cities for ages. I guess it's helpful if you want to climb to a higher difficulty level.
