I am also a fan of the little to no research strategy. But this is how I've been working it...

In the early ages, there is massive techno trading amongst the civs, but not a lot of gold. If you build up a treasury, you can trade for some of the basics while you build out your own infrastructure. Techs are pretty cheap when most people have them already. The tricky thing here though is the Great Library; if you're set on getting this wonder, you'll want to put a little bit into tech and then do a sprint (raise up to 90%) for the tech. Better yet is to focus on getting those units up to Elite in your combats and get that Leader so that once you buy the tech you can build the GL in one turn.

Whether or not you have the GL (I didn't in the last two games I played with this strategy), you can still follow just behind your opponents in tech as you keep pace with them through to the next age. Once you get to a monarchy/republic (depending on your war status) and can start spending to build those city improvements, make marketplaces (and later banks) to really kick your income into high gear, as opposed to libraries and universities. As your production improves, maybe even as late as factories, you can catch up/buy those research improvements.

Somewhere around the beginning of the third age, you can turn on the juice. Either maximize your science spending and live off the fat of your treasury, or push it up until you're barely still in positive cash flow (usually 50-70% range). With your infrastructure in place, and you already keeping pace with the rest of the pack, you'll suddenly be shooting ahead with 4-6 turn research times and begin to leave them in the dust. A space victory is nearly assured.

I've won consistenly on Monarch (well, except for that disaster of a GOTM5 game I had) with this strategy, seeing roughly the same results, and am about to start trying it on the next level up...
 
I'm currently playing a deity/huge/16Civ/pangaea map with a no research strategy.

I've just passed the "flip" point in the strategy which occured at 500AD. At 500AD the status is:

1) I never moved my research slider off the zero setting even once up to this point.

2) The entire world is approaching the end of the Industrial Age. (After just 165 turns out of 540 in the game. This is ridiculous. I know the settings I'm playing accelerates things, but when I last played a game like this with 1.16 the research pace was nowhere near this crazy. This pace is not fun.)

3) I am fully caught up in tech. It takes some very careful trading to do this but it can be done, and can be done at almost no cost in gold. I've included gold in only a few deals for tech in the entire game so far, and not much gold even then. At most stages up to this point I've been behind of course. Sometimes way behind. But that really doesn't matter most of the time. There are just a few key points (e.g. Chivalry) where it pays off to get caught up. At most times it really makes no difference to be quite a bit behind in tech.

4) I built Theory of Evolution in 500AD and am finally starting some research, at 100%. (I seem to only need two settings with the strategy I'm playing. "off" until 500AD. "on" after that. :))

Next the strategy flips of course. I've sold one of my two free techs for a huge amount of gold and hope to leverage the other one into an ongoing tech lead. Still quite difficult - many other Civs remain much stronger at this point due to the dizzying pace and their deity build advantages.

Very careful trading is critical to a zero research approach at this level. And also to maintaining a lead once you get it. It is important (and quite tedious) to regularly check what deals are possible with all other Civs and to make the best ones (both in immediate gain and in strategic consequences.) When milking a deal it is important to sell to the other Civs in order of their ability to pay. The attention to trading which is required is interesting at times but overall I would say it is more tedious than pop rushing was with 1.16, sigh.
