I just downloaded 1.17, but when I try to start the game, I get a "please inset cd in drive" message. Did I install the patch wrong? Someone, please help me! It's been almost 24 hours since I've played Civ! :suicide:
Try uninstalling the game, delete all the contents of your CivIII folder (as some of the content in this folder stays even after uninstalling the game), then reinstall the game, then the 1.17 patch.
That should help.

People are so quick to assume someone is using a cracked copy... that is just plain rude.
I have had this same problem, if I try to open Civ III after the 1.17f patch I get the insert CD in drive problem. My soultion is to open and close the CD tray and then the CD boots to the install/play/readme choice of the CD where I click "play" and it works. Obviously a problem with the patch but the work around isn't too bad.
Currently Civfanatics does not t allow links to a unauthorized cracks, which are out there, and often fix this sort of problem. If you have a problems with you cd drive conflicting with the copy protection on the disk and not playing properly you can:
A. get your cd/dvd-rom drive's driver updated,
B. contact infromgrames support to get their official crack for the conflict.
