I know this has been discussed in another topic, but I thought it should have its own topic.

Kudos to the originators of the idea, and all those who have helped me (without knowing it) to put this statement together. I claim no rights to this idea whatsoever.

Firstly, oil resource appears at sea as well as on land.

Unit to harvest said oil

I propose a new unit - the oil rig.

This unit can only be built in port cities.
It has the A/D/M of a worker
To harvest the resource the "oil rig" will "build a colony" over the resource.

For defence the oil rig may carry units, but only in its colonial form, we don't need any more transports.

Ships may dock at an oil rig, and for the more aggressive they may be used as staging platforms, however, they can ONLY colonise and oil resource, and not any old square.

Sea Oil can only be seen and OIl Rigs built after Miniaturization is discovered. The Oil Rig Worker is a great idea. Oil Rigs themselves should be able to garrison infantry troops only. Helicopters can be rebased to Oil Rigs. Transports can dock, but only infantry can land. OIl Rigs count as harbours for ship repair and trade. OIl Rigs aren't lost when culture borders expand. Ships stationed on Oil RIgs do not violate territory treatries. Only Paratroopers and Marines can directly attack Oil Rigs. Oil Rigs can be sunk by bombardment if all units are redlined. OIl Rigs are captured if attacking troops win combat.

good idea... i thought of it first though :crazyeye:  :goodjob:

Id expand it to include a few other minieral resources... 2 or 3 not a dozen or something like that. AND....Maybe allow this Sea Worker to gather fish or whales, adding food to the nearest city?? This way, highly productive sea squares that are hard to exploit get a chance.

I like that idea. Not too sure on the whole military garrison and ship repair facilty though. Maybe just allow ships on the same tile to protect it and have it act like a coloney. Once all defending ships are destroyed, the enemy can capture/destroy it.

I like this idea a lot!! :goodjob:

This is something I hope the design team is going to seriously consider. I tried to mod Oil resources for water tiles, but then realized there was no way to work the resource (no roads at sea). Worker colony as Oil Platform? That is just freakin' brilliant! Anybody have any ideas how to make this a reality within the current constraints of CivEdit?
