If you go over to 3D Buzz, they have some fairly informative videos to get you started. Though most of those videos are for 3ds Max 4-6, it should give you a good understanding on what most of the functions are in 3ds Max.

If you've never used any 3d modelling program before, you're going to have a steep learning curve. Try going to http://www.3dtotal.com/ . They have a lot of great tutorials there for 3ds max, and should help you get started.

Ok been looking try'd the start of it out so far so good, But..lol theres always a but how do i import a civ4 unit? so i can change it a bit or what ever. all this just to get more modern units into my game

You can't import the game's .nif files into 3D Max. There is only the plug-in for exporting your 3D Max scenes as Civ4 .nif files. So it's a one-way street.
