Playing a retail version of Civ3 v 1.07. As the computer it is on has no access to the internet, I have not updated it, and am having fun learning the simpler game without all the fixes of the patches.

Could anyone tell me some tricks and strategies that worked especially well on the early versions of this game?

Infinite forest chopping/replanting works in version 1.07 (not on wonders/palace being built or switched to, of course). But the real trick here is not to get a cramp in the finger from hitting shift-c/n all the time... ;)

Extorting cities and millions of gpt from the AI in peace treaties. Having your game lock up every time a fighter intercepts a bomber. Oops, that wasn't so much fun, I guess.
Out of curiosity, why learn to play on an older version?
The 1.29 patch is <10mb. You could save it to a Zip disk or a CD-R and transport it to your Civ computer and play the same game the rest of us do. I'm not sure 1.07 was any simpler than 1.29, but it sure was buggier.
