I really want civ 4. But my graphics card is a stupid Intel Extreme 2. I want a cheap one that will work. Will Geforce4 MX 4000 PCI work?

I think the Radeon 9550 is meant to be Ok... Gefore4 is getting pretty out of date... Try and get a low-end current generation card if you don't want to spend much.

Do you only have PCI expansion? If you do, then I guess you might find it more difficult. If you've AGP, you have a lot more options. Can you post your computer specs (including motherboard?)

Its ok, my cousin found me a chap one that will work.

Well will the GeForce FX 5500 work?

People with the highest graphics cards available are suffering from the current state of the game code. I hope that after another patch or two that the minimum and recommended system specs that Firaxis provides will work properly. Until things change however, an FX 5500 will have to wait with the rest of us for a playable game. :(

Divide Overflow, have you tried any of the fixes floating around the forum? I'm running a 6600GT, 1 gig of RAM and A64-3200+ and was having frequent crashes, graphics glitches etc until I tried the INI file changes which fixed just about everything. Harkonnen's patch is also helping many people. I was soundly cursing CivIV until I got it to work properly - I still think that it shouldn't have these problems, but they can be improved while we wait for an offical patch.

It seems like Firaxis is actually working on incorporating some of the ideas that were behind these fixes into an upcoming patch.

edit: I've just seen in another thread that you have tried the fixes. It also doesn't surprise me to hear that 8 of your friends also have problems. I hope that the next patch does fix your problems! : )

I just want one that will work for under $100 with a PCI slot. Thanks for all the help!

How come you need PCI? If you're computer's pretty old and that's why it has no AGP, you should consider whether your PC is going to run CivIV OK... it's fairly demanding on the hardware. Getting a new low-end system may work out more expensive in the short term but a better choice in the long run.

If, on the other hand, you have a Dell or some other proprietary PC that saved costs by not including an AGP port, but is otherwise reasonably up to date, then getting a PCI VGA card isn't so bad.

WOAH! I just found out that MY computer (not the one i wanted a card for by the way its a dell) has a card that will work.

Okay, well you just answered some of my questions too. After I decided my graphics card was the problem I bought a G-Force 6200, 256MB card, ( with 260g HD, 512Mb RAM, Pentium 4) ) and I really thought that would fix the problems, but I still have the stuttering problems, the game crashes, and last night froze completely. I am curious about any people that DID NOT have any problems, what kinds of systems are they running? IE: What are the REAL specs the game was designed for...For instance none of the professional reviews I've read about the game mention any of the problems that us regular scmucks have had to struggle through, why is that? Anyways, enough whining...I've downloaded Harkonnen's patch but I'm a little hesitant about how to proceed, I have never had any formal training. Are there some INI file changes that are a little less imposing for a non-techie? Thanks in advance.

I have actually run the game with a 5200. I did get very choppy graphics though. I could play endlessly, but it was hard to watch.

Well, if a game is to work properly, u musst check if your parts in your computer run´s good together.

Great, I'm glad you had no trouble.
My wonder movies are very choppy, I think it's because I'm late-game. At first, the INI changes had everything working perfectly instead of CTD every couple of turns, but I think the movie slowdown is to do with the well-described "late game slowdown" that seems to happen to everyone. At least the INI changes keep things going.
If the Firaxis patch doesn't come out in the next couple of weeks I think I'm going to use Harkonnen's in the meantime.

Same here, and I still get some short screen-freezes, but at least its not crashing. The game is playable enough to enjoy until the patch comes out. Let me know how Harkonnen's patch works. Thanks again.
