Hey,
Jeez, you finally find out how to mod Civ III to the first two eras only, play it for a week, then you come home with Civ IV and its all screwed up... stupid firaxis...
I want to mod Civ so it only goes up to the one before the renaissance, but from what I've seen in the editor you can't change the rules or the senario.
If anyone could tell me how to work the editor and mod it to my preferences I would be grateful.

All of the rules for Civ IV are stored in the games XML files. You have to manually edit them in order to change any of the rules for a senerio. Unfortunately this is a very tedious task as Firaxis didnt give us any sort of GUI program that makes it easy to do. Its not hard to do once you find what everything does, its just time consuming.

I suggest taking a look around the modding forums. Theres alot of material out there relating to XML editing (if of course you have no experience). I also suggest getting Max X Fires XML Reference Guide Located Here

How is Firaxis stupid for programming a highly customizable game?
Wouldn't it be more related to stupid for someone to not be able to read some XML files and find something out on him/herself?

they could have made it a little less time consuming,and a little more user friendly for people who aren't that great at programming.

they always could have done that, but basically firaxis did a pretty good job with making civ iv moddable. i can't touch python, but XML is really not that hard to figure out. and, hey, it's a computer, you can't tell it "I want taoism to be discovered with the advent of flight and not philosophy" and expect it to come out without actually changing the file that makes it do so.

it's not an easy thing to make moddable.
